Finale Breakdown: Not Your Average Spy Caper
The last episode, ‘Fathers and Sons’, kicks off by unpicking what really happened in Odesa. Turns out, the supposed terrorist attack was more chess than checkers. Russian ultranationalist Ivan Zarkov staged a full-blown coup to shove his nephew, Vasili Adrenov, into power. But that’s not all: Zarkov had a personal vendetta against the Reece family, dating back to the Vietnam War, of all things.
Reece and his mate Raife Hastings end up hunting Adrenov in Ukraine, tracking him to an abandoned factory just before he absconds into Russia. After a bit of classic bloody interrogation—hatchet at the ready—Adrenov comes clean: the Odesa sniper wasn’t going after CIA man Freddy Strain (despite what everyone thought), but was targeting Reece himself, because Reece’s dad, Thomas, killed Zarkov’s brother back in ‘Nam. Adrenov doesn’t live to regret spilling that—Reece finishes him off. And just in time, as the Russkies are on their way.
Meanwhile, back in the States, Reece finally gets word that his old man didn’t do a runner on the family, but actually died on a covert job in Buenos Aires in ‘97. The CIA link goes deeper than he thought though—Reece spots Oliver Grey, the resident mole, swanning about HQ wearing Thomas’s watch in some old footage. That little detail hints Grey had a hand in Reece’s dad’s ending, and he’s now hiding out in St. Petersburg with a new job, likely under Zarkov’s orders.
The season closes with Reece starting to prep for his brain tumour op, but not before journalist Katie Buranek hands him her unpublished book on his escapades and gives him a nudge to sort out his health for once.
Who Doesn’t Survive?
If you’ve followed the show, you know it doesn’t pull its punches with the body count. Here’s the major exits by the finale:
- Freddy Strain (Gabriel Luna): Offed in the Odesa assassination attempt, but gets some measure of redemption after saving lives and having his reward money put in a trust for his son Samuel.
- President Drozdov: Russia’s head honcho, gunned down at the peace summit as Zarkov’s coup unfolds.
- Vasili Adrenov (Costa Ronin): Doesn’t make it out of that Ukrainian factory, courtesy of Reece’s hatchet skills.
- Jules Landry (Luke Hemsworth): Bit the dust earlier in the season after Reece discovers his part in the dodgy Operation Kestrel cover-up.
The show’s showrunner, David DiGilio, has been teasing a potential Season 3, pointing to Jack Carr’s third book ‘Savage Son’ as more than enough fuel for another round. Carr himself reckons the next outing would dig even deeper into the twisted hunter-vs-hunted theme.
