If you’re hoping Masters of the Universe’s Prime Video success guarantees a sequel, Travis Knight makes his stance — and hurdles to returning to Eternia — clear.

So, Masters of the Universe had what you might politely call a “mixed run” at the box office, but you’d never know it glancing at Prime Video. For five weeks straight, this new He-Man adventure was the most-watched film on the platform, even though in cinemas it managed just $114 million worldwide off a budget somewhere between $170 and $200 million. Let’s just say it’s a good thing streaming numbers count for something these days.

Masters of the Universe led Prime Video’s film charts for five consecutive weeks following release.

A Director’s Take

Director Travis Knight has clearly loved steering the ship on Eternia. But when he sat down with ScreenRant to discuss what’s next, his answer was honest—he’s not the ultimate decision-maker on whether a sequel happens. Here’s Knight, in his own words, when asked about continuing the saga:

“It was such a joy making that movie; I had so much fun working with that team. If the universe, in its wisdom, asks us to make more of these things, we would be delighted to give them more.”

In other words: Knight’s up for round two, but it’s not as simple as raising a Power Sword and shouting “by the power of Grayskull!” The studio needs to see more than just love from the creative team—the financials have to stack up or at least the streaming engagement needs to look irresistible.

All the Pieces Are Set for a Sequel

The first film did clever work on the story front, keeping doors open in case the bosses at Amazon want to cash in on the streamer success. In the final act, Prince Adam (played by Nicholas Galitzine) fully embraces his He-Man destiny and comes back to Eternia—textbook setup for another adventure. Then there’s the mid-credits and post-credits scenes, both clearly built to tease us. We meet his twin sister, She-Ra (Lauren Saliu), stuck in the Fright Zone. Knight himself has already said she’d be a lead figure if they get another go. The post-credits also leaves Skeletor (Jared Leto) waiting in the wings via Evil-Lyn (Alison Brie), and drops a proper live-action intro for Hordak, another classic villain, which would be a shakeup if they flip the script for the next round.

Here’s the main cast, in case you’re not keeping score at home:

  • Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man
  • Lauren Saliu as Princess Adora/She-Ra
  • Jared Leto as Skeletor
  • Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn
  • Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Morena Baccarin, Kristen Wiig in supporting roles

Response and What Happens Now

This isn’t one to win over the critics’ circles, landing at a so-so 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, though regular viewers seemed much happier with a beefy 85% audience rating—about par for modern blockbuster nostalgia exercises.

So, on paper, it’s the classic streaming-age dilemma: underwhelming cinema ticket sales, but a streaming performance executives can’t ignore. A sequel is far from guaranteed, but the groundwork’s there, and Knight is absolutely on board if Amazon give the nod. At the moment, a direct-to-Prime Video follow-up looks like the most likely route if it happens at all.
