If you thought Avengers: Endgame’s domestic lead was safe, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is closing in as Tom Holland’s sequel keeps performing strongly in cinemas.

We all knew Spider-Man was popular, but apparently we underestimated just how many people will fork out for a ticket if you put Tom Holland back in the suit. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the latest entry in Sony and Marvel's increasingly ridiculous cash machine, is absolutely roaring along at the US box office this summer — and it's now facing down one of the last records in its way: the domestic total for Avengers: Endgame.

Brand New Day is now less than $4 million away from knocking Endgame off the top domestic spot.

If you're keeping count, that's $854.9 million for Brand New Day in North America, up against Endgame's lifetime domestic haul of $858.3 million. Given how little is left between them — and the fact that Brand New Day is still pulling in numbers week after week — Spidey is almost certainly going to take the crown any day now. Big moment for the friendly neighbourhood box office tracker, that.

How Big Is It, Really?

Let's put this in perspective. When Endgame came out in 2019, it was the presumptive Goliath — smashing all sorts of records and pulling in a frankly daft $2.799 billion worldwide. Of that, $858.3 million was from the US/Canada, and a separate $1.941 billion came from the international side.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn't quite there globally; it's currently around $2.22 billion worldwide (with $1.365 billion of that international). But again, all eyes are on the domestic race, with Spidey closing in on that Endgame summit.

The Record-Breaking Bit

One stat that's already been beaten: Brand New Day became the fastest film to hit $500 million in North America. Somehow, it pulled this off in only seven days — a day quicker than Endgame managed when it was hoovering up your disposable income back in 2019. It's a small difference unless you're in marketing, but still, something for the record keepers.

  • Brand New Day domestic total: $854.9 million and counting
  • Avengers: Endgame domestic total: $858.3 million (all-time high — for now)
  • Brand New Day worldwide: $2.22 billion (international: $1.365 billion)
  • Endgame worldwide: $2.799 billion (international: $1.941 billion)
  • Brand New Day fastest to $500 million domestic: 7 days (Endgame did it in 8)

What Are People Saying?

Critics and punters both seem on board: Rotten Tomatoes shows a 90% score from critics (out of 423 reviews, so it's not a fluke), and — because everyone loves Spidey now — a nearly silly 98% audience rating. That's about as glowing as it gets for a big-budget sequel these days.
