Five years on from Dune kicking off, the third film reportedly packs a runtime that’ll shake up the saga.

Right, it’s been five years since Denis Villeneuve kicked off his grand sci-fi adaptation, and by the end of this year, he’s apparently wrapping it all up with Dune: Part Three. If you’ve stuck with Paul Atreides so far (and, let’s face it, most of us have, if only to argue about the sandworms), this is the chapter where everything explodes or implodes—depending on whether you buy into the prophecy or just want the galactic politics. Notably, this isn’t a straight continuation: time jumps nearly two decades ahead, with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul now in full emperor mode. The Fremen are still singing his praises, but there’s plenty of terror mixed in, with a shiny new conspiracy lining up to ruin his day.

Dune: Part Three currently looks set to be the shortest film in Villeneuve's saga, clocking in at just 2 hours and 30 minutes according to an AMC Theatres listing.

The Dune films have always leaned into epic sprawl—lots of interstellar drama, philosophical posturing, and the odd sandstorm to pad things out. Both the 2021 opener and its 2024 follow-up were proper endurance tests, roaring past the 150-minute mark. Yet AMC Theatres has just dropped a runtime for the third instalment which, if it holds true, makes this the briskest outing yet. Dune: Part One ran 2 hours 35 minutes, Part Two stretched to 2 hours 46, but supposedly the third film is a neat (by comparison) 2 hours and 30 minutes.

  • Part One: 2 hr 35 min (2021)
  • Part Two: 2 hr 46 min (2024)
  • Part Three (upcoming): 2 hr 30 min (AMC's listing, may change)

The story this time takes us to Paul’s imperial era—saviour on the banners, tyrant in the nightmares, and beset by another round of would-be usurpers. With the shortest runtime on paper, Villeneuve is either keeping it tight for the finale, or we might be in for another last-minute adjustment. We'll see if anyone dares trim another sandworm scene before December lands.
