Fresh off a box-office smash, Obsession’s Curry Barker wants to give you a longer cut — and the extra footage he’s eyeing isn’t exactly small change.

So, Obsession – the horror film that seemingly came out of nowhere this spring – has become a bit of a phenomenon, pulling in numbers that are frankly ridiculous for an original horror flick. But if you thought the 109-minute version that hit cinemas back in May 2026 was the final word, think again. Director Curry Barker, surprisingly chipper about the cut we all saw, has started talking about a much longer version. Yes, there’s more. Apparently quite a bit more.

Obsession became the second-highest-grossing original horror film of all time, just behind The Sixth Sense.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Barker revealed he’s got about 20 minutes of scenes and bits left out of the theatrical release. To be fair, he doesn’t sound at all bitter about those choices, and says the final cut was pretty much what he wanted anyway. In his words, this is already the director’s cut – he got his wishes for the most part. Even so, he’d ‘love’ to see a longer version out there one day. For film nerds, that’s catnip right there, isn’t it?

Director’s Cut Drama (But Not Really)

The interesting part is that Barker isn’t angling for a do-over. He said outright that he’s happy with what ended up on screen, suggesting there’s no lost “vision” here, just extra material he had to leave behind. He hasn’t dropped any clues about those missing scenes, mind you – so don’t go expecting deleted plot twists to suddenly make sense if they ever see the light of day. Still, it’s now confirmed the longer cut would run about 129 minutes if it ever actually gets released.

  • The theatrical release came out in May 2026 and runs for 109 minutes
  • A possible extended edition would add roughly 20 minutes of unseen footage
  • No release date has been teased for this longer version – or even confirmation it’s definitely happening
  • Barker built up his career as a YouTube content creator – this is only his second feature, and first with a major studio behind him

Box Office Monster

Obsession’s numbers are wild. It managed to rake in $525 million, making it the highest-grossing original horror movie since The Sixth Sense. Not bad for a filmmaker better known for internet videos than major releases – frankly, it’s a leap most so-called ‘content creators’ could only dream of.

Barker’s tight-lipped about exactly what’s lurking in the extra 20 minutes and hasn’t confirmed if – or when – the longer cut will see daylight. For now, fans will have to speculate over what got left behind in the edit suite and whether we’ll ever actually see this fabled longer version on streaming or disc.
