Harry Potter series stars pulled from London Christmas lights event amid protest fears
Protest fears have seen the Harry Potter TV show’s popular child actors pull out of a Christmas‑themed tie‑in event.
Not quite the Christmas magic they had in mind, is it? HBO is getting the publicity machine rolling for its hefty new Harry Potter TV series, but their chosen trio of young leads are already sitting out the season's flashiest promo event—thanks to simmering controversy that's apparently never more than a pumpkin pasty away from boiling over.
Christmas Lights Without the Stars
Here's the situation: Dominic McLaughlin (that's Potter himself), Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley), and Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger) have opted out of flicking the switch at the annual Oxford Street Christmas lights in London. The event, scheduled for 9 November 2026, should have been a showy moment for the three young stars—but as first reported by The Independent, HBO has decided it's just not worth the aggravation.
The reason? There's been speculation that activists may turn up to protest J.K. Rowling's well-publicised positions on trans rights. HBO would rather not throw its child cast into the midst of a PR storm before the first episode's even aired.
An HBO spokesperson explained their thinking: "not to involve our young actors in the official switch-on event for the Oxford Street Christmas lights."
Can't really blame them, to be fair. We've definitely seen less cheerful turnouts on Oxford Street over the years.
All the Festive Tie-Ins
The switch-on is part of HBO's big partnership with the New West End Company to plaster the capital with Potter paraphernalia ahead of the series launch. The official line is that it'll "bring the magic of Harry Potter to Oxford Street this Christmas," with plenty of themed attractions pitched at shoppers and tourists. Whether it all now has the intended sparkle without actual Hogwarts pupils in attendance is anyone's guess.
The joint press statement promised "Harry Potter-inspired celebrations and attractions to shoppers, commuters, international visitors and fans throughout the festive season."
Main Cast and Release Dates
Season 1 launches Christmas Day—25 December 2026, for those still scribbling shopping lists—with a cast that probably cost Warner Bros. a fortune in catering alone. Alongside the newbies, you get John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu taking on Snape, and Nick Frost in the boots of a presumably enormous Hagrid.
Season one of the Harry Potter TV series lands 25 December 2026 on HBO.
The series is already locked in for seven seasons—one per book, no surprises there.
Renewal and Casting Shake-Ups
Season 2 is already confirmed, too, and they're not shy with announcements. Kit Harington (yes, straight from Game of Thrones) will show up in an as-yet-undisclosed role. Katherine Parkinson will apparently have a larger presence as Mrs. Weasley next year, after a quick appearance in the first season. Then there's Bonnie Hill, who will take over as Ginny Weasley from Gracie Cochrane due to what's politely been described as "unforeseen circumstances"—always a phrase to raise an eyebrow or two.

- Heavyweights like John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, and Nick Frost round out the cast, with more surprises promised for future seasons.
- Season 2 will expand existing roles and add fresh faces, including Kit Harington and Bonnie Hill taking over as Ginny.
