Paul Bettany has quietly racked up more MCU roles than anyone, with recent Disney+ turns pushing him far beyond the synthezoid you had him pegged as.

If you had ‘Paul Bettany’ on your list of MCU actors with the most mileage, give yourself a pat on the back. The bloke’s now played six different characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and no, that’s not a typo. Considering most actors in these films are lucky if they leave with one role and a gym membership, Bettany’s resume is frankly taking the mick at this point.

Paul Bettany is now the only actor to have played six separate roles within the MCU.

Six Faces, Same Jawline

  • J.A.R.V.I.S. – Bettany started out as the disembodied voice of Tony Stark’s AI sidekick, dishing out dry sarcasm across Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He even lent his voice to a variant J.A.R.V.I.S. in the animated What If…? series, because apparently one universe isn’t enough for him.
  • Vision – With a bit of sick MCU alchemy, J.A.R.V.I.S. merged with Ultron code and the Mind Stone to become Vision, this time with Bettany showing up in person under the layers of prosthetics and computer graphics. He gets a run in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and WandaVision.
  • White Vision – Because one Vision apparently wasn’t enough, S.W.O.R.D. put the old synth back together, wiped his memory, and painted him white for that extra unsettling touch. Bettany dons a rather pallid look for this one, first in WandaVision, then again as leading man in VisionQuest (the 2026 Disney+ series), and he’ll be at it again in Avengers: Secret Wars.
  • Phineas Horton – In episode seven of VisionQuest (titled ‘Immolation’, if you’re keeping score), Bettany turns up as Phineas Horton, the original mad scientist type who built the world’s first AI automaton. The poor bloke’s haunted by family tragedy and, in classic Marvel fashion, gets a dressing-down from his wife.
  • J.I.M. / Synthetic Man – In the very same episode, Bettany pulls double duty by also bringing Horton’s synthetic creation to life: J.I.M., a.k.a. the original Human Torch (not the Fantastic Four one, nerds), complete with a tragic inability to cope with human emotion which, naturally, leads to things going completely sideways. This android’s programming apparently kicks off a whole MCU lineage of artificial intelligence problems. Cheers for that, Phineas.
  • Ultron (in Vision’s Body) – Bettany’s sixth turn came courtesy of the VisionQuest episode ‘Malware’. This time he’s physically playing Ultron, only it’s Ultron nicking Vision’s body for a joyride, which is the sort of meta bit of casting only Marvel would even attempt. For once, not just James Spader’s problem.

The Field Is Not Close

Everyone jokes these comic-book universes are hard to keep straight, but Bettany’s set a record that’s genuinely bonkers even by superhero standards. While plenty of actors have done double – or even triple – duty in Marvel films across eras, no one else has juggled this many official roles, sometimes even appearing as two different people in the exact same episode. At this rate, if Marvel ever needs a backup Nick Fury, you know who they’ll call.
