Marvel Studios’ X-Men has reportedly found its Iceman — and the choice looks like just the sort of gamble the MCU could use.

Marvel's on the march again with its next big team-up, and the X-Men casting machine just keeps churning. If you've been keeping an eye on who's joining this new line-up, you’ll want to update your scorecard: Ben Wang’s just landed the role of Iceman for the upcoming MCU take on the mutant franchise.

Another Iceman, Please

You probably know Wang from the forthcoming Karate Kid: Legends and the next Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (which, let’s face it, his agent must be thrilled about). Now he’s taking up the mantle of Bobby Drake, known to Marvel fans as Iceman. This makes him one of the crucial original members for the MCU’s fresh batch of mutants.

But Wang’s not exactly a predictable choice—at least if you’ve been following the fan chatter. Most were banking on Gabriel LaBelle (from The Fabelmans) turning up with the X-Men this time round. It turns out LaBelle and a few others, including Jackson Kelly and Rhenzy Feliz, all tested for the part, but Marvel decided to roll the dice elsewhere. There’s a bit of uproar online, as is the law these days whenever Marvel ignores internet dream-casting, but that’s half the fun isn’t it?

Wang is boarding a cast that already includes Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, with Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.

Why Wang?

Now, Wang’s age—he’s 29—does make him a touch older than some expected, but it fits if the MCU’s hot on making their X-team look more like the old guard. Iceman’s not the “kid brother” in this version, then, but one of the more seasoned hands, possibly even with some leadership weight. Call it a tone shift: less ‘school for gifted youngsters’, more seasoned superheroes who already know which end of the business card is up.

Iceman, one of the founding X-Men, will be brought to life in the MCU by Ben Wang—whose action credentials apparently tipped Marvel over the edge in his favour.
  • Ben Wang (Iceman/Bobby Drake)
  • Christopher Abbott (Professor X)
  • Kit Connor (Cyclops)
  • Sadie Sink (Jean Grey)
  • Samara Weaving (Emma Frost)
  • Inde Navarrette (Rogue)
  • Maya Boyd (Storm)
  • Adam Driver (Mister Sinister)

That experience in big action sequences doesn’t hurt either. Wang’s already proved himself on proper blockbuster sets and, in the process, shown he can hang with carefully choreographed punch-ups. If history’s taught us anything, it’s that Marvel loves an actor already trained for the chaos of a tentpole film. He knows the drill, he knows his marks, and most importantly, he probably won’t crack under a hundred takes in blue ice makeup.

As ever with Marvel, the proof is in the team chemistry. The rest of the X-Men line-up is looking pretty unique, in all the good ways and possibly a few odd ones. Expect a bit more casting news, but for now, Wang's signing definitely fits Marvel’s recent habit of going slightly off book with its ensemble picks.

The MCU's new X-Men film enlists Ben Wang—fresh from Karate Kid: Legends and Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping—to play Iceman, joining what’s fast becoming one of Marvel’s most surprising ensemble casts.
