Neve Campbell says she’s heading back to a certain horror franchise, with the next instalment in the works.

Right, gather round, Scream fans – time for the latest on this gloriously messy horror series. Scream 8 is, at last, making actual progress after what can only be described as a rather chaotic period behind the scenes. Eight months have ticked by since Scream 7 dropped, which, if you remember, was a record-smashing box office hit but a bit of a critical punching bag. Still, the powers that be are determined to keep Ghostface's blade sharp for another round.

Scream 7 opened on 27 February, 2026 with $63.6 million in ticket sales – a franchise record.

Major Cast Shuffles

First, let's address the ghost in the room: the return – again – of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. You can't kill her off (well, not just yet), and you apparently can't do without her either. After Melissa Barrera was sacked amid all sorts of controversy, Spyglass Media and Paramount did a complete U-turn, convincing Campbell to come back after all that drama over payday for Scream VI. Now she's on board for number eight.

Deadline caught up with Campbell, and in a conversation about her status in the next film, she summed it up briskly:

In her own words: 'I’ll be in it,' going on to add the next film is 'in the pipeline as well.'

If you were hoping she'd let anything else slip, think again. On what to expect or even when it's out, all she gave was, 'I can’t tell you anything about Scream 8.'

Who's Writing (and Not Directing… Yet)?

At this point, Scream 8 doesn’t have a director attached – no real surprise, given the revolving door lately. What we do know: in March 2026, screenwriting sisters Lilla and Nora Zuckerman were handed the job of turning Scream's next chapter into something watchable. These two previously steered Peacock’s Poker Face and have credits on shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fringe, and Suits. There’s no confirmation yet whether they’re building on Neve Campbell’s reported “great idea” for the next film (as Kevin Williamson let slip before the last instalment), or just taking it in their own direction.

Who’s Actually Coming Back?

The rest of the cast list is, frankly, a mystery. Who’s definitely not coming back? Melissa Barrera is out for the foreseeable, saying she won’t have anything to do with Scream whilst Skydance Pictures owns it. Matthew Lillard – yes, he popped up (sort of) as Stu in Scream 7 – said he’s “embarrassed” about doing so after Barrera was kicked to the curb, so don’t hold your breath for him. Tragically, Hayden Panettiere (Kirby Reed in Scream 4 and Scream VI) died in August 2026 at only 36, so her character’s story ends there.

Critical Wobbles

Box office? Amazing. Reviews? Less so. Scream 7 launched with a gleeful $213.8 million worldwide run, carving out the biggest total in franchise history – but the critics absolutely savaged it. A 29% Rotten Tomatoes score makes it the lowest-rated Scream film to date, and that B- CinemaScore ties it with Scream 3 for audience apathy. Clearly, Scream 8 has its work cut out.
