Zooey Deschanel explains why a New Girl reunion isn’t up to her
Bad news if you were hoping for a New Girl reunion: Zooey Deschanel says something outside her control is blocking it — even after the cast’s charity reunion.
Right, so it’s that time again: rumours are swirling about a possible reunion for New Girl, and this time it’s Zooey Deschanel herself addressing what’s really going on. Fans have been getting their hopes up after seeing the core cast back together at a recent charity event, but if you thought that meant season eight was around the corner, hold your horses.
Legal Hurdles and Reunions
Deschanel spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about whether there’s anything brewing behind the scenes. And, in classic Hollywood fashion, it turns out things are massively complicated. Basically, it’s not down to her, or even the rest of the cast, to decide. She made it very clear she’s not the one pulling the strings. Here’s how she explained the situation to the Reporter:
I don’t know because there’s a lot of legal stuff involved. There are many different entities and people involved. I wish I were the authority on that, but I’m very much not.
There you have it. Even with all the main players apparently keen, and that wave of fan enthusiasm online, the return of Jess and the gang is bogged down in good old-fashioned legal red tape. It’s more wrangling with contracts and lawyers than skipping down apartment hallways.
A Proper Reunion… For Charity
The latest tease that got fans excited was a full cast appearance at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles. That happened on 10 October 2026, when Deschanel, Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone and Damon Wayans Jr.—basically everyone you’d want—turned up for a single night only. It wasn’t a secret shooting or anything: just a high-profile charity do, thanks in part to Greenfield rallying the troops. That’s what kicked the internet speculation up a notch.
I’m really close with everybody, though. That event was incredible, and hats off to Max [Greenfield] for getting everyone together. He worked so hard to make sure everyone could be there. It was an incredible event for Chrysalis, which is such a great organization. They do such great work, and we were thrilled to help them raise money for a great cause.
No big reunion announcement or subtle hint buried in the night—just a lot of goodwill and some money raised for a non-profit doing decent work. For fans, seeing the group all in one place was probably enough, even if nothing official is on the books.
- The whole cast—Deschanel, Greenfield, Johnson, Morris, Simone, and Wayans Jr.—appeared together for the first time in ages at the 2026 Butterfly Ball, which fuelled speculation of a TV comeback.
Meanwhile, if you’re following Deschanel outside the sitcom world, she’s just finished touring with her band, She & Him. So she’s keeping plenty busy, reunion or no reunion.
