Jessica Biel explains why she and Justin Timberlake let their son appear in Matchbox
Jessica Biel says her 11-year-old’s acting debut only happened under one surprising condition she and Justin Timberlake laid down — and you probably won’t guess what it was.
If you thought celebs just swan their kids onto film sets for a dose of early stardom, think again—or at least, think again in the case of Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake. Their son Silas is nabbing his very first movie credit in the new action-comedy Matchbox, but as Biel made clear in a recent podcast chat, it was hardly a free pass to the spotlight.
Silas Timberlake gets his film debut in Matchbox—but don’t blink, he doesn’t utter a word.
All in the Family (Sort of…)
Biel popped up on Josh Smith’s Great Chat Show to spill the beans about letting 11-year-old Silas appear on screen alongside her in Matchbox. She was open about the decision: she and Timberlake said yes only because, to put it bluntly, Silas’s role was small. If you’re expecting a precocious leading man performance, lower those expectations—this is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo at the tail end of the film, and the kid’s lips are zipped.
Biel got a bit more serious about why she and Timberlake are cautious about letting Silas anywhere near child star territory. She told Smith she explained to Silas that plenty of kids out there are grinding away at acting classes and theatre workshops, properly earning any parts they book. In her words:
‘You can’t just take a part from that person just because you’re my son. Like, that’s not cool. We’re not doing that. So this is a special opportunity because it’s really teeny tiny.’
This wasn’t just a parental guilt trip either—Biel admitted she feels tempted to "squash" Silas’s acting ambitions, but ultimately, she doesn’t really want to stomp on his dreams. Still, she’s taking the slow-and-steady approach, not the full-on Hollywood push.
The Matchbox Cast and Crew
Matchbox itself is a full-on action-comedy built around Mattel’s classic toy cars, directed by Sam Hargrave (the Extraction guy, if you’re wondering). The main cast’s a proper ensemble: John Cena, Biel herself, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, Teyonah Parris, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp all pop up in various roles. Silas—again, important to stress—shows up right at the end, but don’t expect any lines or Oscar moments.
- Jessica Biel as lead and producer
- John Cena sharing top billing
- Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, Teyonah Parris, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp in supporting roles
- Directed by Sam Hargrave
- Based on the Mattel toy brand
Biel’s not wrong about the industry being full of pushy parents and nepo babies. At least in this case, it’s strictly a cameo—with no chance for Silas to nick a role from some poor kid who’s spent years slogging it on stage. And if you do spot Silas, no need to crank up the volume—he’s just there to wave, not speak.
