A box office bellyflop for The Social Reckoning has Aaron Sorkin second‑guessing his directing — and he’s just said so on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast.

So, Aaron Sorkin made his directorial return with The Social Reckoning, and to be blunt, the results haven’t exactly screamed “smash hit”. It’s all been a bit awkward for the man behind The West Wing and The Social Network—a proper legend on the writing side of things, but, it seems, still trying to find his feet as a director. And he’s not pretending otherwise, either.

Box Office Numbers and Audience Reactions

The film landed in cinemas on 9 October 2026. If you blinked, you might’ve missed it: according to The Numbers, its worldwide box office take was just $16,891,831. Even odder, over half of that came from its debut weekend—clearly, there was a rush of Sorkin-curious punters, but not a lot of staying power after that.

$16.9 million is all The Social Reckoning scraped up at the global box office.

The reception wasn’t exactly the stuff to give the marketing department a heart attack, but not stellar either. Critics sat at a middling 54% on Tomatometer, audiences boosted it a touch with 71% Popcornmeter (both via Rotten Tomatoes), and IMDb settled somewhere in no-man’s land at 6.7/10.

Sorkin’s Candid Reflection

Sorkin popped up on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast after the dust had settled, sounding more philosophical than defensive. He admitted he’s still learning the ropes as a film director, and, frankly, isn’t sure if he’ll ever get truly good at it—particularly when it comes to those intangible bits you can’t just swot up for.

During the interview, Sorkin talked about his experiences with screenwriting students, and his view on what sets real talent apart from craft you can pick up from a textbook. Here’s how he summed up the knotty bit of the creative process:

‘From time to time, I get to speak with screenwriting students, and I'll be asked, "Is screenwriting something that can be taught?" And the answer is, "There are parts of screenwriting – important parts – that can be taught and can be learned, but there are parts that can't be."' He continued, "And those parts that can't be? That's usually what we mean when we use the word 'talent.' I'm very worried that the parts of directing that I'm not good at are those parts that you can't learn.’

The Plot and Cast Breakdown

The Social Reckoning covers real-world events around the so-called Facebook Files. The story orbits Frances Haugen, a Facebook insider who ropes in Wall Street Journal journalist Jeff Horwitz to help reveal the company’s dodgiest secrets. Sorkin himself penned the script, so at least you know the courtroom speeches probably popped, even if the film as a whole didn’t set theaters alight.

  • Jeremy Allen White (yes, the one everyone fancies from The Bear), leads as Jeff Horwitz
  • Mikey Madison and Wunmi Mosaku also get chunky roles
  • Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr, Jeremy Strong, and Gbenga Akinnagbe round out a surprisingly stacked cast
