Yes please — Hayden Christensen wants live-action Clone Wars reunion series with Star Wars prequel cast

If you thought Obi-Wan Kenobi was the last word on those Star Wars prequels, you might want to park that idea. Out promoting his latest film The End of Oak Street, Ewan McGregor made it clear he’s still got plenty of appetite for another round as Obi-Wan. Not to be outdone, Hayden Christensen is now floating an even wilder idea: why not just get the whole prequel lot back together and have a proper live-action go at Clone Wars?

Christensen said on the Hey Jonas podcast, where Kevin Jonas asked him about an Anakin spin-off: "I know that Ewan McGregor would love to do more with it. I’ve heard Natalie [Portman] would love to come back. Sam Jackson. So you could get the band back together."

McGregor Still Keen for More Obi-Wan

McGregor, never especially shy about loving his stint in the galaxy far, far away, claimed he’s 'ready whenever they are' for more Obi-Wan. From his perspective, it’s just Lucasfilm that isn’t shifting. At the end of the last series, we left Kenobi wandering off into the Tatooine sunset, leaving young Luke in peace, and — this is classic Star Wars — off on a vague journey with Qui-Gon’s Force ghost. That’s exactly the kind of door left ajar for another series, and McGregor’s clearly itching to walk through it.

But while McGregor would happily scuttle further into the desert, Hayden Christensen is looking a bit grander. He spilled on the Hey Jonas podcast that he prefers the idea of getting the old prequel gang — think Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson, and presumably any other Jedi who fancies popping round — for a live-action take on The Clone Wars. In fairness, these were the only Star Wars films where entire armies of Jedi get to strut their stuff, so it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever heard. Christensen basically wants to re-form the (blue) band — and for once, it sounds like the actors would be genuinely up for it.

Spin-Offs and More Maul

Elsewhere in this ever-expanding prequel universe, Disney+ have already brought Ahsoka to live-action — Rosario Dawson as the star, with Christensen reprising Anakin at her side. That alone finally gave fans the Skywalker/Ahsoka dynamic they’d waited yonks for. As for the villains, Darth Maul is now stalking his own animated Disney+ series: Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. It’s done well enough to get a second season.

Executive producer Dave Filoni summed up Maul's situation: "Maul is afraid, and power is the only way that he knows to really overcome this fear of his. This fear of being insignificant, of being forgotten, of being a nothing."

Sam Witwer, who voices Maul, compared the character to an athlete whose career collapsed: trained from day one to win, but botched the big moment and never recovered. Maul remains haunted by what could have been — perhaps not so far off from certain Star Wars careers, depending whom you ask. Still, as long as Disney can wring more drama from these old wounds, the prequel era doesn’t look like fading quietly anytime soon.
