Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey might be actual bros — and they’re leaning into it in Brothers, the new Apple TV+ comedy that just set its premiere date.

So, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are at it again—this time, not just as best mates, but possibly (stay with me) actual brothers. Yes, you read that right. There’s been a running joke for years that these two Hollywood legends might have more in common than just a bromance. Now, they’ve built an entire TV show around the idea, and, honestly, it's a bit mad.

That Strange DNA Chat

The whole 'maybe we're siblings' thing took off after Woody Harrelson dropped a rather offhand comment on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert a few years back. According to Woody, he and Matthew were in Greece, watching the U.S. win the World Cup (all very normal stuff), when the subject of regrets came up. At some point, he shared, in his own words:

'We talked to Ma Mac, Matthew's legitimate mother, and she let us know one time… I mean, this is crazy. We were in Greece, we were watching the U.S. team win the World Cup, and I don't know, I mentioned something about regrets. And I said, 'You know, it's odd that my father has no regrets.''

Matthew's mum apparently piped up that she “knew” Woody's dad—deliberate ellipses and all, making it just vague and awkward enough for Woody to note: 'It was the ellipses I found a little troubling. Or interesting. "I knew… your father."'

The Show: Brothers

This ongoing family mystery is now getting the AppleTV treatment in a straight-up comedy series called Brothers. Both Woody and Matthew play, well, themselves—dealing with the delightful chaos that follows when a decades-old family secret comes tumbling out.

  • Premise: After Woody’s daughter’s wedding ends in disaster, he packs up his family and heads off to Matthew’s ranch in Austin. It’s meant to be a calming getaway, but that doesn’t last. Enter Ma Mac (played by Holland Taylor), who lets slip a secret that sets off this DNA detective caper: the lads may actually be brothers. Meanwhile, Matthew’s mind is elsewhere, as he contemplates making a run for governor of Texas. So, yes, you get the family melodrama, political ambition, and two actors who are practically mates in real life—fighting over ancestry kits and statewide office in one go.
  • Episodes: The series is eight episodes long.
  • Release: Hits AppleTV on 23 September.
  • Executive Producers: Both McConaughey and Harrelson are producing, so expect full commitment from both on and off screen.

What To Expect

The series promises plenty of meta-jokes—Hollywood star personas, weird family revelations, dodgy DNA subplots, the works. Apple’s official line calls it a 'heartfelt, chaotic, and wildly funny story about friendship, family, fame, and the messy line between myth and reality.' It sounds like the sort of project these two would dream up after a few drinks at the bar, except now it's a real thing you can stream.
