After three years away, a hit Apple TV series is back — and it’s just pulled in its biggest audience yet.

Bit of a surprise this one: after a tidy three-year break, Ted Lasso has charged back onto Apple TV with its fourth season, landing on 4 August 2026. If you'd have bet against more Lasso after that Season 3 curtain call, you weren't alone, but Apple sees at least one more story in the tank—and judging by the numbers, so do its viewers.

Ted Lasso’s Season 4 premiere smashed Apple TV’s all-time viewership record, racking up 296.6 million minutes watched in just two days.

Breaking records, changing scenery

The latest run hasn’t just brought the show back; it’s upended a fair chunk of what you’d expect. The Season 4 opener reunited Jason Sudeikis (Ted himself), Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca), Juno Temple (Keeley), and Jeremy Swift (Higgins) — but not on that familiar Richmond patch of grass. This time, they’re all shipped over to Ted’s home turf in Kansas City. Don’t worry, it’s still packed with the usual awkward visits and tension, as Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins attempt to lure Ted back to the UK, with the twist that he might be coaching a whole new women’s football team.

  • Rebecca is picking up threads with that enigmatic Dutch fellow from Amsterdam.
  • Keeley is off on her own mission, having knocked back both Roy and Jamie and pitched a women’s team for Richmond instead.
  • Ted is Stateside, trying to be a better dad, as seen at the end of Season 3.
  • Season 4 sees familiar faces mixed with a host of new supporting characters, given several original players have moved on.

According to Nielsen figures highlighted by The Wrap, the opening episode clocked up nearly 300 million minutes of watch time in just its first two days (to be pedantic: 296.6 million, for August 4–5). That’s blown past anything else Apple TV has posted, and made Ted the most-watched streaming series in the US for that window.

Critical temperature

Viewership’s one thing, but how’s it landing with critics? On Rotten Tomatoes, Season 4 is currently sitting at 90% based on 89 professional reviews — which is no mean feat, but it’s slightly off that sparkling run from earlier: the first two seasons held at 92% and a frankly ridiculous 98%. Still, it’s a marked jump from Season 3’s 81%. The fan-facing Popcornmeter for the first two episodes is hovering at an above-average 79%. Critics, for the most part, are being kind, though a few are flagging where attempts to reset the series might stray too near its old playbook.

The second episode jets Ted back to Richmond, where things get more interesting: he meets Coach Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds), who’s less than thrilled, and butts up against the real-life headaches and inequalities dogging women’s football in the UK. Apple’s clearly ready to steer the Lasso train into topical territory, and whether you’re here for the football, the emotional pep talks, or just to see if Sudeikis can still sell his brand of daft optimism, the fourth season’s not afraid of tackling big themes with a smile and a wince.

There’s still a whiff of déjà vu about some storylines — the show’s at risk of circling the same airport more than once — but even so, with episodes dropping every Wednesday, it doesn’t look like many fans are dropping off just yet.
