True Detective season 5 just got Nicolas Cage — and a beloved Oscar nominee, too
True Detective’s fifth season has snagged Nicolas Cage as its lead — and he won’t be the only big name, with a beloved Oscar nominee joining him.
If you thought True Detective was running out of surprises, think again. For its fifth season, HBO has bagged not just one but two Hollywood heavyweights: Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas. That's right: Cage is officially making the jump into the True Detective universe, and Banderas is coming along for the ride. This is the first time either actor is fronting a season of the often-imitated police anthology.
True Detective will return for a fifth season, with filming set to kick off in 2027.
Meet Your New Detectives
HBO confirmed that Cage will play a character named Henry Logan, starring opposite Banderas as Rai Garcia. The pair are taking over the series torch after the show's latest reinvention, and I'll be honest, that casting alone is enough to pique my curiosity.
Cage actually started raising eyebrows earlier this month at New York Comic Con, dropping not-so-subtle hints about his involvement before the official word was out. Here's how he put it on stage, with his agent probably eyeing the exit:
"My agent’s out there somewhere listening. He's probably, 'Don't say anything there.' So I think I'm probably gonna do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective. That's okay that I'm the first to announce that, right?"
Banderas’s recent CV is just as interesting. Beyond his Oscar-nominated turn in Pain and Glory with Pedro Almodóvar, he's shown up in everything from the Bourdain biopic Tony to last year's indie Babygirl. The pairing with Cage feels properly unhinged, in the best possible way.
Who’s Steering This Ship?
If you watched last year’s icy instalment, True Detective: Night Country, you’ll recognise the name Issa López. She’s coming back as showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer—basically overseeing every creative aspect. Y’know, the rare TV auteur situation. López managed the tricky business of making the show feel new while still nodding to earlier seasons, and apparently there’ll be some thread connecting Season 5 back to that last frosty outing.
What We Know About Season 5
They’re setting the action in Jamaica Bay, New York City—a pretty big change-up from icy Alaska. It’s classic True Detective: new case, new cast, fresh location, same promise of murky mysteries and probably at least one wild monologue delivered by Cage while it rains. HBO’s keeping the actual plot under wraps, but expect echoes from previous seasons—López has apparently woven in some connective tissue.
The greenlight came back in February 2024, not long after Night Country clocked in some of the series’ best ratings and found its way back into critics’ good books. Since the show dropped in 2014, it's reinvented itself each season—new cast, new enigma, and now, two Oscar nominees to boot.
- Cage as Henry Logan, Banderas as Rai Garcia—first time this duo has worked together
- Issa López back as the all-in-one creative force
- Season 5 set in Jamaica Bay, New York City
- Shooting starts in 2027, with stories apparently looping in threads from last season
