Why did Matthew McConaughey pass on a huge The Last of Us TV show role?

Here we go: Matthew McConaughey has finally opened up about why he dodged the chance to star in The Last of Us TV series. That’s McConaughey, chatting to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, without a trace of the typical Hollywood evasiveness. Turns out he did have proper talks about the show—right about when he’d effectively stepped away from acting altogether. By his own account, he was knee-deep in writing, exploring “leadership roles in life”, and whatever bit of personal soul-searching has to happen before you reappear in front of cameras again. So, even though he was keen on the series and not at all dismissive, the timing just didn’t click. He puts it bluntly: yes, The Last of Us is excellent, but TV (or at least, that TV) was not on his menu at the time.

For a bit of context: The Last of Us is the glossy HBO adaptation of the Naughty Dog PlayStation hit, with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey leading as Joel and Ellie. The show became one of those rare game adaptations that critics and fans both genuinely rate; so McConaughey passing on it—especially as he was in genuine contention—isn’t the sort of behind-the-scenes trivia you find every day.

McConaughey Back On The Big Screen

Instead of mushroom zombies, McConaughey’s latest effort is the crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, officially landing in UK cinemas on 14 August 2026 (limited release) before it rolls out nationwide on 21 August 2026. This is the first time he’s popped up in a major film in six years—quite a hiatus, for a bloke who was everywhere for a bit. And he’s not easing back in with a cameo, either: he’s carrying the film, playing Amziah King himself—a rural Oklahoma musician-turned-honey-merchant who runs into unexpected trouble (and, apparently, a reconnection with his long-lost daughter for good measure).

It marks McConaughey's first starring role in six years.

Asked what lured him back to the set, McConaughey’s answer was as earnest as you’d expect: he felt drawn to a character who 'gives belonging, who brings the light, and puts people in the light. Everyone he meets, puts them in the center of the circle and raises them up.' In other words, he’s not exactly playing the grizzled antihero this time around.

Directing duties for The Rivals of Amziah King come courtesy of Andrew Patterson. For trivia buffs and casting fiends, he’s not flying solo—Angelina LookingGlass, Kurt Russell, Scott Shepherd, Cole Sprouse, Tony Revolori, and Rob Morgan are all turning up somewhere on the bill. No shortage of potential scene-stealers then.
