Amid fresh chatter that the X-Men reboot’s Emma Frost role may already be spoken for, a report spells out why Margot Robbie was never in the frame.

For weeks now, the internet's been busy peddling some pretty lively rumours about Margot Robbie stepping into the role of Emma Frost for Marvel's big X-Men: Reboot. Yes, that's right—the psychic mutant with the diamond skin. But, as tends to happen, the reality is a bit less gossip-column and a lot more boring. Robbie? She was never actually in the running. Instead, it looks like Samara Weaving has all but landed the part.

How the Emma Frost Casting Actually Played Out

So, here's what really went on. Auditions for the mutant flick have been happening since May (yes, that far back), and the hunt for Emma Frost has apparently been the most painstaking of the lot. Despite a host of internet hearsay, Robbie was never a realistic candidate. The reasoning is surprisingly straightforward—she just doesn't do audition tests anymore. That's according to Deadline's Justin Kroll, who put the matter to bed in a post on X:

Auditions for X-Men has been going on since May and the Frost part is the search that has been the most thorough. That said they were always looking to audition this part like all the others so someone like Margot was never a reality since she no longer test for roles.

So, scratch that one from your rumour list. Also, a few other names were floating around for the part of Emma Frost—Sydney Sweeney and Rebecca Ferguson among them—but it seems none got as far as actual talks. If Samara Weaving seals the deal, we should be seeing a slew of other casting updates for Jake Schreier's X-Men before too long.

X-Men: Reboot is set to hit cinemas on 5 May 2028.

What About Robbie and Superheroes?

If you were hoping to see Robbie suit up as a mutant, don't panic just yet—she's still not done with comic book roles. She has, of course, played Harley Quinn across a string of DC films: Suicide Squad in 2016, followed by Birds of Prey in 2020, and The Suicide Squad in 2021. And now that James Gunn is overseeing a 10-year revamp of the DC Universe, Robbie's Harley could easily pop back up. Gunn himself has been somewhat cryptic on the subject, previously hinting that Harley will "be revealed down the line".

For what it's worth, Robbie has said before that she "fell in love" with Harley Quinn during the filming of Birds of Prey. She apparently poured herself into researching the character, even going so far as to listen to TED talks by women with schizophrenia, and called Harley "unpredictable"—a quality she described as a real gift for actors.

Rumour also has it that Birds of Prey's Harley Quinn could make an appearance in The Batman II, which is already in production and due out on 18 February 2028.
