Why Anthony Mackie’s Captain America Suddenly Showed Up on Spider-Man 4 — Not a Cameo
Tom Holland says Anthony Mackie popped by Spider-Man 4 — and, on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, he teased a specific (and rather funny) reason for the visit.
Here’s one for fans of on-set mischief: Tom Holland has dished out a rather amusing story from the shoot of the next Spider-Man film, officially titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day. If you ever wondered whether superheroes just pop round each other’s flats, apparently they do – provided those flats are film sets and the superheroes in question are on the payroll of Marvel Studios.
Tom Holland told Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast: "Mackie came and surprised me on the movie. We were shooting in Peter's apartment, and I was doing this scene and all of a sudden Captain America was in my apartment."
Superhero Crossover – But Not The Kind You Think
Holland gave a bit more context to this cameo-without-cameras rolling. Both Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day happened to be filming at Pinewood, which led to a bit of ‘pop-in and say hi’ behaviour from Anthony Mackie (these days best known as Captain America, in case you’ve not kept up).
So, while Tom was busy trying to keep a straight face in a dramatic bit set in Peter Parker’s flat, Mackie appeared mid-take, all decked out in the full Cap uniform. Apparently, one minute Holland was acting, the next he was facing the Star-Spangled Man With A Plan in his own fictional living room. No hint of a meltdown, though – Holland kept on, and it all ended in a laugh.
As Holland described the moment: "We were both filming at Pinewood. So Avengers (Doomsday) was across the way and Spider-Man: Brand New Day was on the east side or west side of the property. And yeah, I was shooting the scene and then Mackie just walks in."
Despite being caught a bit off guard, Holland said it was genuinely a pleasure. The two apparently hung out for a bit, admired Mackie’s wardrobe, and generally had a catch-up. In his words, “It’s nice to catch up. He looks great in his costume.”
Spider-Verse News, Casting and Details
If you’re counting familiar faces, Zendaya is back as MJ, and Jacob Batalon returns as Ned. On top of that you’ve got Mark Ruffalo doing more Hulk and Jon Bernthal bringing Frank Castle/The Punisher into the mix. There’s also Sadie Sink (ex-Stranger Things) joining up in what’s being billed as a significant role, although Marvel are keeping specifics under the usual layers of secrecy.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day lands in cinemas on 31 July 2026.
This time round, Destin Daniel Cretton is directing. So, if you’re hoping for more offbeat superhero banter behind the scenes, sounds like this set doesn’t disappoint.
