The setup
Rebecca becomes convinced her daughter Lory (Kelcey Mawema) is making bad choices, and the discovery of a secret boyfriend is the final straw. Her solution: lock Lory in the basement cellar — the very same cellar where Rebecca herself was once held captive by her abusive father. Lory doesn't know that history. The audience does.
The missing-girl performance
While Lory sits in the cellar, Rebecca plays the devastated mother of a missing child for the cameras — and she's alarmingly good at it. The key beats:
- #LookingForLory — the town mounts an exhaustive search, and Rebecca becomes a minor internet celebrity in the process.
- The cold case — after a month, the police officially end the search. Lory stays in the cellar.

How it ends
As suspicion builds and the evidence mounts, Rebecca's double life collapses. In the final stretch she decides the only way to stay free is for Lory to die — and that's the moment the police finally storm the house. They find Lory in the cellar, weak, filthy, and disoriented, but alive. She tells them plainly: her mother kept her captive.
Rebecca is arrested and charged with false imprisonment — and with the deaths of her own parents, which the film ties to an arson in her past. The cellar, it turns out, wasn't her only secret.
What happens to Lory?
The film closes with Lory speaking to the press. She thanks the police for saving her life and acknowledges that her mother was once a victim in that same house — while making clear that what happened to her ends with her. It's the closest thing to closure the story offers.
