Girl in the Cellar premiered on Lifetime on 23 August 2025 as part of its Ripped from the Headlines strand, with Kyla Pratt playing well against type as Rebecca — a mother whose idea of protecting her teenage daughter goes somewhere very dark. If you bailed before the finale or just want the ending laid out, here's exactly how it all shakes out.

Spoilers ahead, obviously.

The setup

Rebecca becomes convinced her daughter Lory (Kelcey Mawema) is making bad choices, and the discovery of a secret boyfriend is the final straw. Her solution: lock Lory in the basement cellar — the very same cellar where Rebecca herself was once held captive by her abusive father. Lory doesn't know that history. The audience does.

The missing-girl performance

While Lory sits in the cellar, Rebecca plays the devastated mother of a missing child for the cameras — and she's alarmingly good at it. The key beats:

  • #LookingForLory — the town mounts an exhaustive search, and Rebecca becomes a minor internet celebrity in the process.
  • The cold case — after a month, the police officially end the search. Lory stays in the cellar.
  • The letter — Rebecca has Lory write a note proving she's alive, keeping the media spotlight exactly where Rebecca wants it: on Rebecca.
  • Austin — the teenage neighbour (Kyle Clark) grows close to Rebecca in one of the film's most squirm-inducing subplots, then starts noticing things that don't add up.

How it ends

As suspicion builds and the evidence mounts, Rebecca's double life collapses. In the final stretch she decides the only way to stay free is for Lory to die — and that's the moment the police finally storm the house. They find Lory in the cellar, weak, filthy, and disoriented, but alive. She tells them plainly: her mother kept her captive.

Rebecca is arrested and charged with false imprisonment — and with the deaths of her own parents, which the film ties to an arson in her past. The cellar, it turns out, wasn't her only secret.

What happens to Lory?

The film closes with Lory speaking to the press. She thanks the police for saving her life and acknowledges that her mother was once a victim in that same house — while making clear that what happened to her ends with her. It's the closest thing to closure the story offers.
