Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D'Onofrio is pushing Marvel and Sony to sort out their rights mess so Kingpin can finally throw down with Spider-Man.

Alright, so let’s talk about the one Marvel mashup that fans have been begging for but just can’t seem to get: Spider-Man versus Kingpin in live action. Somehow, after all these years of superhero crossovers, multiverse shenanigans, and that bizarre Marvel-on-Sony custody arrangement, we still haven’t gotten the classic showdown between Wilson Fisk and the webhead. And as it turns out, Kingpin himself—well, Vincent D'Onofrio—feels your pain.

The Rights Problem Nobody Loves

Here’s the obstacle: Sony’s still got their mitts tightly wrapped around Spider-Man’s movie rights, which has made it a logistical circus whenever Peter Parker has to play ball in Marvel’s cinematic sandbox. We did finally see Tom Holland’s Spidey join up with the Avengers thanks to a pretty complex Sony/Marvel handshake, and we’re now three solo movies deep with a fourth apparently on the way. Fans have gotten a taste of crossover action—Charlie Cox showing up as Daredevil in 'No Way Home' was a big deal—but there’s still plenty of red tape keeping other fan-service moments just out of reach.

Fans Want Kingpin vs. Spider-Man—So Does D'Onofrio

Vincent D'Onofrio has been carrying the Kingpin torch since the Daredevil Netflix days, so of course fans reached out to see if he’ll ever get to square off with Spider-Man on the big screen. D'Onofrio responded on social media the way a lot of us feel:

'If Sony and Marvel ever get their sh*t together maybe. It’s a complicated rights issue. Hope so.'

That’s pretty much the real answer. Unless Sony and Marvel can stop squabbling over which universe gets which characters, that dream fight might still be out of reach. But, at least D'Onofrio is on board if the studios ever sort themselves out.

Hints, Teases, and the State of Spider-Man Crossovers

If you saw the recent 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' trailer, you might have caught some familiar faces from the Daredevil world. Frank Castle (that’s The Punisher for the uninitiated) made an appearance, and there were some pretty clear nods to The Hand—basically, all the gritty NYC Marvel stuff. Yet, no sign of Kingpin and Spidey actually duking it out … yet.

  • Sony let Spider-Man join the MCU for the big 'Infinity Saga' stuff, but still gatekeeps the character’s solo stories
  • Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock swung over to the movies for a quick cameo, raising hopes for more universe-blending
  • Kingpin and Spider-Man feud in pretty much every other version of Marvel media – except live action so far
  • There are rumors and hints—especially with 'Brand New Day' and its street-level focus—that Kingpin might finally show up in Spidey’s world

The Daredevil: Born Again Factor

All this is happening as 'Daredevil: Born Again' gears up for its second season. Our site's own Alex Maidy managed to catch some early episodes and gave it an enthusiastic 9/10, calling it:

'Better than the first season and on par with the Netflix series’ strongest elements … easily one of the most enjoyable mature superhero series ever, earning a spot alongside The Penguin.'

So not only is Daredevil still in fighting shape, but the show's leaving doors open for more stories—maybe even that elusive Kingpin/Spidey showdown if Sony and Marvel ever get over themselves.

Bottom line: The Kingpin has never let a technicality get in his way for long, and neither has Spider-Man. If the studios get their act together, maybe we’ll finally get to see them go toe-to-toe for real. Until then, we’ll be over here watching for Easter eggs and hoping someone in Hollywood is listening to Vincent D'Onofrio (and, you know, the fans).
