Vince Vaughn delivers a mixed update on Wedding Crashers 2 — progress continues with David Dobkin scripting, but hurdles remain — nearly 21 years after the original became a critical and commercial smash.

Well, here we go again—'Wedding Crashers 2' is officially circling the rumor mill for what feels like the hundredth time. Yes, it’s been more than two decades since the first one hit theaters. Yes, the original was a legit comedy juggernaut. And yes, everyone seems to want a sequel. But is it actually happening, or is this just more Hollywood "maybe, maybe not"?

So, Are They Doing It or What?

Vince Vaughn, who played one half of the shameless original party-crasher duo, just talked to E! News about where things really stand. The short version: nothing is officially greenlit, but folks are talking about it—again. Vaughn basically said he’s in if there’s a good story, but they’re not about to throw something together just for the sake of cashing in.

Here’s how Vaughn put it, speaking at the premiere for his new movie:

'Well, there’s always been discussions about it. I would, you know, if there’s a good story, it’s always fun to do something. But I think you need a really good idea and not just jump into it.'

Worth noting: Vaughn also pointed out he’s never actually made a sequel in his career, even though he’s had plenty of offers—so he isn’t exactly dying to revisit old characters unless there’s something fresh to say.

When someone pressed him on what his character, Jeremy Grey, and Owen Wilson’s John Beckwith might be up to after all these years, Vaughn gave one of those wishy-washy "who knows" answers:

'You never know in life where roads take you.'

Who Else Is in on This?

For those keeping track at home, this Vaughn update follows an earlier one from Owen Wilson about five months back. Wilson told Collider that director David Dobkin is actively working on a script, and that discussions were happening, but only if they stumbled on 'something [they thought] could be great.' So, basically: don’t expect progress unless everyone’s obsessed with the idea.

The plot gets a little weirder with Isla Fisher’s update. She told Watch What Happens Live! that she actually secured a U.S. visa to film the sequel—two full years ago, no less. According to Fisher, she was ready to go, Dobkin was in, Vaughn was in, but Wilson’s schedule was getting in the way. In her words: 'All the ingredients are there.'

Quick Recap: Where Things Stand

  • Vince Vaughn says he's open to coming back, but ONLY for a story that actually works. Not just another lazy sequel.
  • Owen Wilson told press that a script is in the works (courtesy of David Dobkin), but no one is locked in until the script blows their minds.
  • Isla Fisher apparently had the legal paperwork and time set aside to shoot the sequel two years ago, but someone (cough, Owen, cough) was too busy.
  • If you were hoping 'Wedding Crashers 2' was days away from dropping, yeah...not quite.

The Bottom Line

Hollywood has a nasty habit of endlessly teasing sequels we may never actually see. 'Wedding Crashers 2' is shaping up to be one of those—unless someone writes something so good, the original cast can’t say no. Until then, expect more updates that are 'good news and bad news' all at the same time.
