With a blockbuster $250 million price tag, Toy Story 5 muscles into the top tier of most expensive animated movies, reuniting Buzz, Woody and the gang for another big-screen adventure.

Right, let’s get straight to it — Toy Story 5 is back in the headlines, and not just because Woody and Buzz are dusting themselves off for yet another round. No, what’s grabbing attention this time is the sheer size of the budget. Pixar and Disney are officially pouring an eye-watering sum into this one, bumping it smack into the ‘most expensive animated films ever’ territory.

How much are we talking, then?

Reports put the budget for Toy Story 5 at a whopping $250 million. That’s just for production — doesn’t even begin to take global marketing into account, which usually adds a small country’s GDP on top.

To put that in context:

  • The only animated film to cost more (allegedly) is Tangled from 2010, at around $260 million.
  • Now Toy Story 5 joins the 2019 Lion King remake for the second most expensive animated film spot — both at $250 million.
  • Previous Pixar entries weren’t exactly penny-pinchers: Lightyear, Toy Story 4, and Toy Story 3 each cost around $200 million.

So, yes, this is officially Pixar’s most expensive movie ever. And no, that’s not adjusting for inflation — these are just the sticker prices as they were reported.

Box Office Pressure — Someone’s Counting Beans

If you’re spending $250 million just on the movie, you’re probably expecting it to put up some serious numbers in return. Word is, early projections suggest Toy Story 5 could open to $140 million domestically and hit $275 million worldwide in its opening weekend. Again, those are estimates, but you get the idea — Disney wants a blockbuster.

This is the benchmark to beat:

  • Toy Story 4 pulled in over $1.07 billion globally back in 2019.
  • Toy Story 3 was just behind, at $1.06 billion worldwide.

The Crew Rides Again

On the creative front, Andrew Stanton is directing this one. If you know your Pixar lore, Stanton’s a heavy-hitter. The voice cast is a proper reunion:

  • Tom Hanks returns as Woody
  • Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear
  • Joan Cusack as Jessie
  • Keanu Reeves is back as Duke Caboom (from the last film — a properly memorable side character, to be fair)
  • Annie Potts
  • Wallace Shawn
  • Ernie Hudson
  • John Ratzenberger

When’s it out?

Toy Story 5 is scheduled for cinemas on 19 June 2026. There’s still a bit of a wait, but if nothing else, we’re guaranteed another round of impressive CG and, presumably, a fair bit of existential angst from our favourite toys.
