Tom Holland’s name is now inseparable from Spider-Man, but the actor is striving to prove he’s more than Marvel’s web-slinger. Can his next big role finally shift public perception?

For many, Tom Holland is the definitive Spider-Man, a role that’s become almost synonymous with his name. Although his first appearance on the big screen was in The Impossible, it wasn’t until his turn in Captain America: Civil War that he truly captured the world’s attention. Since then, he’s donned the Spidey suit in six Marvel blockbusters, not counting a fleeting moment in Venom: Let There Be Carnage that ultimately led nowhere. Holland’s knack for embodying Peter Parker’s awkward wit and youthful energy has been both a blessing and a bit of a curse.

Audiences now expect a certain brand of teenage awkwardness and quick-fire humour from him, making it tricky for Holland to break out of the mould. His attempt to shake things up in Uncharted didn’t quite do the trick. Yet, it’s not for lack of trying. He’s taken on darker, more complex roles—think his troubled character in The Devil All the Time or the emotionally fraught lead in Cherry. These performances show he’s got range, but the shadow of Peter Parker still looms large.

There’s no denying the appeal of Holland’s take on the pop culture-obsessed schoolboy, but if he’s to be recognised for more than just his superhero antics, a clean break might be in order.

Looking Beyond the Web: Holland’s Next Steps

After nearly a decade as Marvel’s friendly neighbourhood hero, Holland himself seems ready for a change. Back in 2021, he told

“Maybe it is time for me to move on.”

The years have ticked by, and yet he’s set to return for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with speculation swirling about further appearances in upcoming ensemble films. Still, Holland appears to know the clock is ticking on his tenure as Peter Parker.

He went on to say,

“Maybe what’s best for Spider-Man is that they do a Miles Morales film. I have to take Peter Parker into account as well, because he is an important part of my life. If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong.”

With his 30th birthday approaching in June 2026, the question of when he’ll hang up the mask for good is more relevant than ever.

New Horizons: The Odyssey Beckons

Holland’s next major project could be the turning point he’s been seeking. In Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated adaptation of The Odyssey, he steps into the shoes of Telemachus, son of Odysseus and Penelope. The cast is a who’s who of Hollywood, with Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron all on board. The film is set for release in July 2026.

As Telemachus, Holland will navigate a world far removed from high school corridors and superhero quips. The story follows his search for answers in the wake of his father’s long absence and the threat posed by his mother’s persistent suitors. It’s a role that promises a more grounded, serious performance—one that could finally allow audiences to see him in a new light.

“The Job of a Lifetime”

Holland himself has described working on The Odyssey as

“the job of a lifetime, without a doubt. The best experience I’ve had on a film set. Incredible. It was exciting. It was different. And I think the movie is going to be unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”

Whether this epic will be the project that redefines his career remains to be seen. For now, fans and critics alike are left to wonder if Holland can finally step out from behind the mask and be recognised for the breadth of his talent.

The Odyssey is due in cinemas on 17 July 2026, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day following on 31 July 2026.
