This MobLand star was actually glad to be killed off in season 2 — here’s why
One of MobLand Season 2’s key players dies violently — and the star’s delighted, breaking down the arc, hidden motives and why it was the perfect exit.
Well, if you're a MobLand regular, here's a twist for you: Alex Fine (Donnie) has finally met his maker in Season 2, and if you thought he might be shedding a tear off-screen—think again. Turns out, he was pretty chuffed about getting axed from the show. Odd, maybe, but that's actors for you.
Joanne Froggatt shot me in the neck. I think that was a good way for Donnie to go,
That's Fine, explaining his rather positive view to TV Insider—after spending two years with the MobLand lot, you'd expect a bit of nostalgia, but he's taking it in stride. Apparently, offing Donnie wasn't a shock. He knew well in advance his character would get the chop at some point: 'We talked about it in the beginning of the year.' What he didn't know was the how or the exact when, which, let's be honest, probably made reading those scripts a bit more interesting than usual.
Donnie's Dirty Work
Just to recap: Donnie was a bruiser for Kat McAllister (that's Janet McTeer), sent to cosy up to Jan Da Souza (played by Joanne Froggatt). Jan, with a bit more grit than Donnie expected, figured him out and put a bullet (well, a neck shot) into his sneaky little plans. Fine says there was never any genuine emotion between Donnie and Jan—Donnie would've gladly finished her off if Frankie had asked. Heart of stone, that one.
He’s blunt about where Donnie's loyalty lies: not with people, just with the gig. Donnie functioned as a handler for Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon), but if you fancied any emotional subplot there, think again. Everything's transactional.
Donnie doesn’t really care about anything other than the job,
You can't accuse him of sentimentality, that's for sure. In a bit of a bizarre side note, Fine shared that one enthusiastic viewer once lobbed an apple at him from her handbag, because she mixed up MobLand with a reality show. Nothing like a fruit-based attack to remind you you've made it onto telly.
