Godzilla Minus Zero roars out of the gate with a record-breaking Rotten Tomatoes debut, as early viewers call it "the most epic movie" of the year.

Every year, a handful of films manage to shake up the whole movie conversation—and just when you thought it couldn’t get any bigger than Wildwood’s stop-motion wizardry, Christopher Nolan cooking up a myth with The Odyssey, or the space explorers in Project Hail Mary, along comes a sharp left turn: a proper jaw-dropper of a kaiju sequel. I’m talking about Godzilla Minus Zero, which landed at the 2026 New York Film Festival and more or less flattened the best-in-show debate the minute it roared onto the screen.

Godzilla Minus Zero premiered at NYFF 2026 and quickly shot to a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score, smashing almost every franchise record.

No Ordinary Sequel

This one’s the latest from Toho, directed by Takashi Yamazaki, and it isn’t swapping subtlety for bombast. Festival critics couldn’t get their breath back: they were floored by the darker, R-rated vibe, the wild visual effects, and—more surprisingly—the gut-punch of a human story running beneath all the destruction. Honestly, that last bit’s not what you always get with monster flicks.

The real kicker? Godzilla Minus Zero notched an early 97% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, beating out almost every prior Godzilla entry and even rival franchise sequels. It’s nudged Godzilla Minus One aside as the new franchise darling, and Best Picture buzz is already swirling—which is… rare territory for a giant radioactive lizard.

The Franchise at a Glance

  • Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995) – 100% critics’ score
  • Godzilla Minus One (2023) – 99%
  • Godzilla Minus Zero (2026) – 97%
  • Godzilla (1954) – 94%
  • Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) – 93%

So, you can see, this one’s now in the upper stratosphere of all-time Godzilla films, at least as far as critics have it.

Industry Buzz and Critical Hype

The internet’s been absolutely soaked with hot takes from industry bigwigs. The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit called it “the most epic movie I’ve seen all year,” raving about the scale and promising set pieces so huge they’ll “drop your jaw on the floor.”

Courtney Howard (film critic) chipped in with praise for the “absolutely spectacular” kaiju chaos on IMAX, but was quick to note the film’s “well-conceptualized human stakes” and proper emotional heft. Meanwhile, Bill Bria reckons it takes everything that made the last film work and just cranks it higher—especially the action and performances.

There’s also the crowd pointing out the tonal shift. Hunter Bolding flagged up that Minus Zero doesn’t linger quite so much on the melodrama as its predecessor, leaning into sheer destruction instead—though, by all accounts, there’s still loads to talk (and feel) about. Peter Howell at the Toronto Star said the themes of collective guilt, grieving, and old-fashioned vengeance are still right up front, so expect the melodrama dial to remain firmly on.

The Big One for 2026?

Between the sky-high Rotten Tomatoes metrics and all the relentless social-media chatter, there’s only so long anyone can keep this thing under wraps. It’s heading to regular cinemas on 3 November 2026, so the wider public’s about to weigh in and, frankly, we’ll see if they buy the “most epic” claims or if it’s just critics getting carried away.
