The Odyssey just did what Christopher Nolan hasn’t done since The Dark Knight
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey just set a milestone he hasn’t hit since The Dark Knight, and the cast and crew are buzzing. With heavy hitters like Samantha Morton in the ensemble, the big question is simple: what record did it break?
If you thought Christopher Nolan had run out of cinematic milestones to tick off, think again. His latest epic, 'The Odyssey,' isn’t even out yet, and it's already smashed a record he hasn’t touched since the days of 'The Dark Knight'. Not even one for box office numbers (yet)—this is all about what happened on set, and it involves a pretty remarkable bit of acting.
Standing Ovation: Not Your Average Day on a Nolan Set
The last time Nolan’s cast and crew rose to their feet for a performance, it was when Heath Ledger wrapped up his iconic run as the Joker. That was back in 2008. Fast-forward to 2026, and it's Samantha Morton stepping up for her turn in the spotlight. She plays Circe in this adaptation of Homer’s Greek myth, and apparently, when she finished one not-yet-specified scene, the entire set broke out in applause. To be perfectly clear: Nolan’s team hadn’t done this in nearly two decades.
Producer Emma Thomas told Empire: 'When she finished her scene, she got a round of applause from the cast and crew. That’s something we hadn't seen since Heath Ledger on The Dark Knight.'
Who is Samantha Morton, Exactly?
If you somehow missed her career, Morton’s basically British acting royalty at this point. Quick highlights:
- Broke out in 'Sweet and Lowdown' (went on to get an Oscar nomination for that one)
- Played Alpha in 'The Walking Dead' (one of telly’s all-time creepiest villains, if you ask me)
- Popped up in 'Fantastic Beasts', 'Minority Report', and plenty more—from 'The Serpent Queen' to 'Harlots' to 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age'
- Two BAFTAs on her shelf, plus another Oscar nomination for 'In America'
So, if you’re Nolan and you want your Greek witch to have real menace and magnetism, you call Morton. Fair play.
Nolan’s Playing With the Big Toys (Again)
'The Odyssey' isn’t just a showcase for Morton's acting. It’s Nolan’s first go at shooting a feature entirely on IMAX cameras. Which, considering his love of big, loud, immersive cinema, you’d sort of expect he’d have done already. But apparently not. Another notch on the Nolan milestone post.
What’s the Film Actually About?
The basics, in case you blanked on the Greek myths: Odysseus, fresh off the Trojan War, tries to get home to Ithaca. This is not a short journey. Trouble with Gods, monsters, Cyclopes, and such. Meanwhile, his wife is stuck fending off some pretty persistent blokes who’d like his throne.
If you've caught the teaser trailer, you know they're going big and fantastical. There will, presumably, be a giant somewhere along the way.
Star-Studded Cast (As Usual for Nolan)
The line-up is basically a who's who of awards bait and blockbuster regulars:
- Matt Damon
- Anne Hathaway
- Tom Holland
- Zendaya
- Robert Pattinson
- Lupita Nyong'o
- Charlize Theron
- Elliot Page
- Mia Goth
- Jon Bernthal
- Himesh Patel
- Benny Safdie
Behind the scenes, Thomas Hayslip is on executive producing duties, and line production is split between Zakaria Alaoui, Hjortur Gretarsson, Erik Paoletti, and Kostas Raftopoulos.
When Is It Out?
Mark your calendar: 'The Odyssey' is set to land worldwide on 17 July 2026.
