The Boys Season 5 Was Always Built For One Epic Final Showdown
The Boys Season 5 has arrived, and creator Eric Kripke says he always knew where it would end — with the epic showdown fans have been waiting for.
If you think The Boys is just winging it season by season, think again. Series creator Eric Kripke, who already has a pretty wild TV résumé (Supernatural fans, you know), says he planned out exactly how this gonzo superhero show would end – and it basically comes down to the fight everyone was hoping for.
The Showdown Was Never Really Up for Debate
Kripke recently opened up about the finale and, honestly, he sounds shockingly chill about just how set in stone the big ending has always been. According to him, it was a no-brainer that Billy Butcher (Karl Urban, still grunting out line readings like a man with sandpaper for vocal cords) and Homelander (Antony Starr, living his best insane-laser-eyes life) would eventually have to duke it out for the last time.
Here’s how Kripke puts it:
"The subject matter is really about this battle between this human, Billy Butcher, and this superhero, Homelander. And it was sort of inevitable that eventually they were going to smash into each other. So, for example, I always knew it was going to end with that. Had I not given that to the audience, I think I really would’ve p---ed everybody off."
Long story short, if The Boys wrapped without Butcher and Homelander trying to murder each other for real, even Kripke admits fans would storm Amazon Headquarters (or at least spam the hell out of Twitter).
Everything Was Mapped Out (Down to the Last Dramatic Death)
And it gets even more 'wait, what, you knew that early?' than that. Kripke says not only was Billy vs. Homelander locked in as the final beat, but every character's ultimate fate was worked out well in advance. The writers knew who was making it out alive, who was going down swinging, and how happy or not-so-happy everyone’s ending would be. Apparently, the last fifteen pages of the series finale were practically carved in stone before half of Season 5’s scripts were ever drafted—they just had to work backward from there and make everything fit.
The Numbers Game: Release Dates & How to Watch
- The Boys Season 5 dropped its first two episodes on April 8, 2026 (yes, the future—no typo here).
- After those, Amazon’s switching to a weekly drop, releasing one new episode every other Wednesday (so, not quite the standard Friday binge drop, just to keep everyone on their toes).
- The whole ridiculous, over-the-top party wraps up with the series finale airing on May 20, 2026.
So if you were worried Kripke was just throwing darts at a board or letting Homelander improv his way into the sunset, rest easy. This ride's always been headed for a Billy vs. Homelander collision, and the writers have known exactly where each poor soul ends up. Whether you’re team Butcher, team Homelander, or just in it for the exploding heads, you’ll get your proper sendoff in Season 5.
