Superman’s breakout fan favorite is getting a spin-off series
A Superman fan favorite is breaking out of the supporting cast to headline his own streaming spin-off.
Here’s a new one for you: DC’s top dog—literally—is about to get his own animated series. Yes, Krypto, freshly a scene-stealer in James Gunn’s Superman flick, is now heading for centre stage. If someone had told me a year ago that a CGI dog inspired by Gunn’s own rescue mutt would become the breakout star of DC’s mega-budget Superman reboot, I’d probably have rolled my eyes. Yet here we are. Let’s unpack what’s going on, because there’s a lot of moving parts with the new-look DCU right now.
The New DC Era and Superman’s Big Run
This all kicked off with Creature Commandos, which officially launched the revamped DC Universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran back in 2024. The baton was quickly handed to Superman, landing in cinemas July 2025. David Corenswet stepped in as Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The result? Certainly not half-baked—box office takings soared to just under $620 million, which, by the way, no other superhero film managed last year. Reviews? Mostly glowing, both from fans and (for once) critics.
Gunn clearly wasn’t short on ambition: the movie packed in a fresh supporting cast orbiting Supes, solidifying this as a long game rather than a one-off nostalgia hit.
Enter: Krypto the Super-Dog
Among the new faces, Krypto properly hijacked attention. If you’ve not seen him, we’re talking about Superman’s white dog, leaping from comics to live-action for only the third time—the last ones being brief bits in Smallville and Titans. Here, he’s entirely CGI, rigged up from Gunn’s real-life rescue dog named Ozu. Far from being just a furry sidekick, this Krypto is a destructive little whirlwind—a proper nuisance for Superman and anyone foolish enough to get in his way. Easily the best bit of chaos in the whole thing.
Krypto Gets His Own Show
News in from the Annecy International Animation Festival: there’s an animated series simply titled Krypto now in development at DC Animation and DC Studios. C.H. Greenblatt is leading the charge, for those who follow animation closely—that’s the mind behind Chowder, Jellystone!, and Harvey Beaks.
Synopsis Breakdown
Here’s how the series is pitched (and I honestly had to read it twice to make sure I wasn’t missing some punchline):
'When he’s not hanging out with Superman or Supergirl, Krypto tags along with a gang of misfit criminal wannabes who live down the block, and they soon discover he’s a ball of destructive, lovable energy worse than any of them! As he follows them into misadventures and poorly laid plans, Krypto’s pure nature slowly ends up redeeming them, whether they want it or not.'
So, not your usual superhero set-up. Krypto—the cuddly chaos engine—basically strong-arms (or strong-paws?) these petty criminals into being slightly less rubbish humans, simply by existing. It’s miles away from traditional superhero storytelling; frankly, it sounds a bit unhinged, but if you saw his antics in Superman, you’ll know it somehow works.
What’s Next for Krypto?
Animated career aside, Krypto isn’t disappearing from the big screen. He’s set for a much bigger role in the next Supergirl film. This time, Milly Alcock is suiting up as Kara, and the plot will see her out for revenge after Krypto suffers a not-exactly-minor injury.
After that, who knows? DC hasn’t revealed where Krypto turns up next in live-action, but at this rate it would be daft to rule anything out.
Key Cast and Crew (Superman Movie Version)
- Director/Writer: James Gunn
- Clark Kent / Superman: David Corenswet
- Lois Lane: Rachel Brosnahan
Just to circle back: Gunn’s Superman marks DC’s hard reboot after Henry Cavill’s exit, going back to an old-school depiction of Supes—that 'truth, justice and the American way' sort of thing.
The Krypto animated series is still in development and there’s zero word yet on when it hits screens.
