Spider-Man: Brand New Day once again leads box office — Insidious opens decently, Mutiny not so much
Spider-Man: Brand New Day holds the box-office crown in its fourth weekend, while Insidious: Out of the Further opens solidly and Mutiny fails to stir much interest.
If you were hoping for a shake-up at the cinema this weekend, tough luck—nothing’s unseated Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is steamrolling ahead in its fourth week. Not a huge shock, really. The new arrivals, Insidious: Out of the Further and Mutiny, are keen but not exactly threatening to the web-slinger’s supremacy.
By midweek, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on course to surpass Avengers: Endgame’s $858 million haul and become the second-highest domestic earner ever.
The state of the charts
Let’s run through the main runners and riders:
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn’t showing much wear. This weekend, it’ll pull in north of $36 million, bringing its US total to an absurd $852 million. Absolute juggernaut territory.
- Insidious: Out of the Further will slot into second with $23 million—not as flashy as the series’ previous entry, The Red Door (which opened with $33 million), but considering the cast shakeup (no Patrick Wilson or Rose Byrne this time, just franchise mainstay Lin Shaye), it’s respectable.
- The Odyssey continues to quietly rake it in, aiming for another $18.5 million this weekend and pushing its US cume to a hefty $538 million.
- PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie unexpectedly noses ahead of The End of Oak Street, pulling $8.5 million compared to Oak Street's $8 million (a nasty 62% drop for Oak Street—ouch).
- Mutiny, with Jason Statham pounding his way through another actioner, lands softer than hoped at $7.4 million. Better than Statham’s last effort, Shelter ($5.5 million), but there’s a big asterisk: thanks to a full-on leak on Amazon Prime earlier this week, pirated copies are everywhere, likely eating into the box office. Not Statham’s fault—unless he moonlights as a hacker, which feels unlikely—even for him.
- Spa Weekend, Black Bear’s attempt at a comedy hit with Anna Faris, Leslie Mann, Michelle Buteau and Isla Fisher, is dead on arrival at $3 million—another stumble for Black Bear, who can’t seem to catch a break at the box office.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on pace to claim the #2 spot among all-time US box office earners by midweek.
