Hoping for 6666? Taylor Sheridan says the Yellowstone spinoff is dead
Yellowstone may be a full-blown franchise now, but Taylor Sheridan says one planned spinoff is dead.
If you’ve been keeping tabs on the ever-expanding Yellowstone universe, you’ll know there’s been no shortage of spinoffs, prequels, and assorted drama on and off screen. But if you were holding out hope for the much-teased 6666 spinoff set on a legendary Texas ranch, it’s time to let that dream go—because Taylor Sheridan himself just put a stake in it.
The planned 6666 spinoff series set in Texas is now officially dead.
Sheridan Pulls the Plug
Back when Yellowstone was still running hot, Paramount announced they were developing 6666, a spinoff built around the real Four Sixes Ranch. Other spinoffs teased at similar times—like 1883—saw the light of day, but the Texas project never seemed to move forward. Now we know why.
On a recent appearance on the Rodeo Time podcast, Sheridan was frank about it: the show’s not only on ice, it’s never going to happen. As he tells it,
‘There’s never going to be one; I would never fictionalize that ranch. People thought that that was going to be a thing, but I would never do that.’
There’s a bit of personal stake here—Sheridan actually co-owns the real 6666 Ranch, so it’s not just a backdrop to him. He went on to explain he’s not comfortable inventing made-up disasters or wild stories for somewhere real, active, and full of actual families and working cowboys. He’s protective of the ranch, calling it a big responsibility and making clear he won’t start ‘trivializing and fictionalizing something where real people work’—his words, not mine.
So What About Jimmy?
If you’re thinking, “Hang on, didn’t the show already go there?” you’re not wrong. During Yellowstone series four, Jimmy Hurdstrom (played by Jefferson White) is shipped off to work at the 6666. Sheridan revealed he’s got all of Jimmy’s 6666 scenes clipped out and strung together on his own computer, making a ‘perfect little movie’ in itself—a misfit’s journey into manhood, apparently. But that’s as far as it’ll go; there is no plan to keep spinning that story out in Texas.
The Broader Yellowstone Spin-Off Machine
Even without 6666, the Yellowstone universe is still ballooning well beyond what anyone expected. There are two full-blown prequels already—1883 and 1923—plus two more spinoffs in the works: Y: Marshals (with Luke Grimes returning as Kayce Dutton) and Dutton Ranch (Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprising Beth and Rip). Paramount+ had one more in their original plans—The Madison—which, in a bit of a twist, is now set to be completely disconnected from Yellowstone as a standalone series.
