Spider-Man: Brand New Day lands massive debut, just shy of all-time opening weekend record
Early estimates have Spider-Man: Brand New Day landing a huge domestic debut just shy of the all-time crown, with the exact gap to be settled by Monday actuals.
Here we go again—another Marvel film swooping in to shatter box office expectations, or at least come bloody close. This time it’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which just had a stunning debut weekend but, by the hair of its chin, missed out on toppling Avengers: Endgame’s all-time opening weekend record. Still, if you enjoy numbers practically printed in comic sans, the margin couldn’t be slimmer.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s opening weekend box office hit $355 million – just $2 million shy of Avengers: Endgame’s long-standing record.
Box Office Comedy of Errors
Official tallies haven’t all been counted, so there’s a crack of daylight for Brand New Day to squeak past Endgame if someone finds a handful of coins in the Marvel lobby’s sofa. Not that it matters much, honestly; whatever ends up on the official books, Spider-Man has smashed past anyone’s forecasts, and Marvel execs will be down the pub celebrating anyway.
Tom Holland’s basically running the entire show this summer. Not only does he nab the top spot with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but his other film, The Odyssey, lands at number two for the weekend. It’s bordering on a monopoly—no one else this month looks anywhere near threatening either film’s grip on the top.
Marvel’s Recent Drought—and a Sudden Flood
It’s not exactly been a golden run for Marvel at the box office these past few years (unless your name’s Deadpool or Wolverine). So you can imagine why Brand New Day’s early numbers have bigwigs at Marvel exhaling heavily and looking a shade less pale. Keep in mind, Marvel has Avengers: Doomsday lined up for 18 December, so they’re desperate for fresh goodwill at the tills, and Spider-Man’s obliged in style.
Then again, Spidey’s about as close as you can get to a guaranteed hit—none of the live-action films has dipped below $700 million worldwide. But this one’s gunning higher; analysts reckon Brand New Day could crack $2 billion before it’s done doing victory laps.
What’s Going On Below the Top Spot?
Not to be overlooked, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey took home $51 million this weekend, pushing its domestic take past $395 million. That now makes it Nolan’s third-biggest film ever, behind the likes of Inception and, presumably, the one where Michael Caine cries at least twice.
In third, Toy Story 5 scratched together $6.2 million—good enough for bronze, but it’s the year’s top-grossing film so far, with $461 million banked. Even so, both The Odyssey and Brand New Day are set to breeze past that total in no time, especially with Spidey swinging about like he’s allergic to second place.
