At the Cannes Film Festival, Seth Rogen fought back tears as his animated feature Tangles premiered — a personal exploration of Alzheimer’s produced with his wife Lauren Miller Rogen that left audiences visibly moved.

Here’s something you don’t see every day: Seth Rogen, best known for making people laugh, got seriously teary-eyed at the Cannes premiere of his new animated film, 'Tangles'. And considering what this movie is about, it totally makes sense.

Rogen Goes Emotional (and He’s Not Alone)

'Tangles' had its big debut at Cannes on May 14th, and apparently, the film had multiple people in the audience reaching for tissues—including Rogen himself. He co-produced the movie with his wife, Lauren Miller Rogen, and also provides a voice in the cast. Turns out, seeing it on the big screen—surrounded by a crowd and not just watching on a laptop in his living room—hit pretty differently for him.

Rogen was pretty blunt afterwards, saying:

'I was crying a lot throughout the entire thing... I’ve seen the movie, obviously, a lot of times. But that was the first time I’ve seen it not on my laptop computer with Lauren sitting beside me in our living room.'

He also admitted that after nearly a decade of work on this project, seeing it finally play to a packed room was 'a lot more intense.'

What Is 'Tangles' Anyway?

Alright, here’s where it gets even more interesting—this isn’t your typical 'animated fun romp.' ‘Tangles’ grapples with Alzheimer’s, so yeah, it’s going to be heavy. It’s based on Sarah Leavitt’s 2010 graphic memoir 'Tangles: A Story about Alzheimer’s, My Mother and Me.' Lauren Miller Rogen (Seth’s producing partner and, just for context, advocate for Alzheimer’s awareness in real life) is also closely tied to the project. Leah Nelson directed the film.

Ten Years in the Making—Still Waiting on a Release Date

So after ten years of development, it sounds like 'Tangles' struck the kind of nerve Rogen and his wife were hoping for. He said he was just happy that it 'works' and that it got such an emotional reaction from the crowd.

If you’re hoping to catch it soon, here’s the one catch: there’s still no word on an official theatrical release date. So, for now, 'Tangles' is one to keep on your radar—especially if you’re in the mood for something deeply personal, beautifully put together, and honestly, a little different from the usual festival fare.
