Sean Penn follows up his Oscar win by directing a film based on a Jan. 6 police officer’s account, with Bradley Cooper in talks to star.

Well, here comes Sean Penn again, striking while the Oscar iron's hot. After picking up a shiny new trophy for Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, Penn isn't just kicking back—he's jumping straight into directing his own next feature. The project’s still untitled, but it's already making waves, and by the looks of it, Penn wants to dig into some pretty charged territory.

Penn Takes on January 6th (But With a Twist)

Penn has apparently written the script himself and will be in the director's chair for what Deadline calls a passion project, producing alongside John Ira Palmer and John Wildermuth under the slightly on-the-nose banner of Projected Picture Works. Warner Bros. is back in the mix as studio partner, with Penn reuniting with them. The whole arrangement came together by way of CAA Media Finance, who did the negotiating on the producers' behalf.

The plot, though, isn’t what you might expect when you hear 'January 6th at the Capitol' as the setting. Yes, it's about a police officer involved in those infamous events, but the film supposedly isn’t a blow-by-blow retelling of the riot. Instead, think of it more as a character study: Penn’s script draws on the real-life journey of one cop, focusing on what led up to that day rather than just the chaos itself. According to Deadline, the story’s ultimately about friendship—something they’re billing as “unexpected”—and it will 'function on multiple levels'. Ambitious much?

The officer who inspired it is apparently on board with the project, but their identity is firmly under wraps for now. Official word is the film will chart the officer's earlier life and the path that led to him becoming what some now call an 'American hero'. But, to keep expectations in check, it isn’t meant as a straightforward January 6th drama.

Bradley Cooper Circling the Lead (But Calm Down, Nothing’s Signed Yet)

  • Bradley Cooper is Penn’s first choice for the starring role.
  • Talks are happening, but no contract’s signed.
  • There’s a scheduling tangle—Cooper’s also busy with that Ocean's Eleven prequel (more on that in a second).
  • They’re now looking at a production start in mid-2027.

So don't pencil anything in your calendar just yet if you’re hoping to see Cooper’s take on a conflicted Capitol cop. The timing all hinges on Cooper’s ever-expanding workload.

Cooper’s Other Gig: The Ocean's Eleven Prequel

This is where it gets a bit Hollywood-insider. Back in April, news dropped that Bradley Cooper’s also attached as writer, director, and star (nothing like spreading yourself thin) for the new Ocean's Eleven prequel. Margot Robbie, in between being basically everywhere, announced the project herself at CinemaCon with a slick little video reveal.

Here’s the pitch Robbie gave the Warner Bros. crowd: 'Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows: his parents. You’ll see them in all their prime in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.'

The project still doesn’t have a title, but it does have a date: Warner’s calling dibs on June 25, 2027. Cooper will be producing as well, via his own outfit alongside Robbie’s LuckyChap shingle, with Warner’s Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy steering things from the studio side.
