Roughly two months after its premiere and fresh off a $640 million global haul, Project Hail Mary’s digital release date has reportedly surfaced, signaling an imminent at-home debut for the record-smashing sci-fi hit.

If you’ve been living under a rock (or, you know, a giant alien rock named Rocky), you might’ve missed the fact that 'Project Hail Mary' has become one of the biggest sci-fi hits of the year. Let’s be honest, not many movies manage to haul in $640 million worldwide in just a couple months, but this one did—thanks in no small part to the power duo of Ryan Gosling’s Dr. Ryland Grace and his unexpected alien buddy.

When Can You Finally Stream It?

So here’s what everyone wants to know: When can you watch or rewatch 'Project Hail Mary' from your couch instead of making a pilgrimage to those sticky movie theater seats? The answer… might be surprisingly far off.

According to WhentoStream (who are quoting evidence from @robmontoya.bsky.social), the movie’s Premium Video on Demand release is supposedly set for May 12, 2026.

Now, before you yell at your screen, nothing’s official yet. Amazon MGM Studios, the film’s U.S. distributor, hasn’t confirmed any of this, which means the date is pretty much in 'maybe, maybe not' territory. But still, it’s worth keeping on the radar (or bookmarking in your phone, whatever works).

Why the Wait?

That lengthy gap isn’t coming out of nowhere. Last month at CinemaCon (yes, the movie geek Olympics), Ryan Gosling himself announced that 'Project Hail Mary’s' theatrical window got a little longer, mainly because the movie’s box office performance keeps shattering expectations. Translation: studios love money, and this one’s still making buckets of it in theaters.

The Film’s Wild Ride (So Far)

  • London Premiere: March 9
  • U.S. Theatrical Release: March 20
  • Pulled in $600M by end of April, now at about $640M (and counting)
  • Positive reviews nearly across the board—Rotten Tomatoes has it sitting at a sparkling 94% and a solid 77 on Metacritic from 60 critics.

The Story, In a Nutshell

Ryan Gosling stars as Dr. Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spaceship with a bad case of amnesia and only gradually remembers he’s supposed to, you know, save the planet. Earth’s facing some serious global cooling, thanks to a pesky microorganism that’s dimming the sun. Grace’s mission: fix it or humanity’s toast. Along the way, he teams up with Rocky—a literal rock-shaped alien he befriends. These two are the odd couple of the galaxy, both trying to save their own worlds. Yes, it’s genuinely as strange and charming as that sounds.

Behind the Scenes & The Rest of the Cast

This film gets its pedigree from producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed, working from a screenplay by Drew Goddard. It’s an adaptation of Andy Weir's 2021 sci-fi novel (so, yes, the author behind 'The Martian' continues his luck with Hollywood). Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce jump in for support, along with Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung, Priya Kansara, Malachi Kirby, and Liz Kingsman fleshing out the cast.

Word on the Street (Or, From The Critics)

It’s getting the kind of buzz you’d expect from a big-budget, genuinely fun sci-fi adventure. One quick pull quote sums up what a lot of folks are saying:

'Ryan Gosling and Rocky might just be cinema’s best new friendship—and audiences agree, judging by the box office.'

If you’re holding out for the digital release, well… patience is going to be your superpower. In the meantime, 'Project Hail Mary' is still out in theaters, raking in cash, and showing that people apparently aren’t bored with stories about awkward scientists and their rock-shaped space friends. As soon as there’s something solid about the home release date, I’ll be shouting it from the (virtual) rooftops.
