Dutton Ranch lands season 2 after a record-breaking debut
Paramount+ has already re-upped Dutton Ranch for Season 2, renewing the latest Yellowstone spinoff ahead of its July 3 Season 1 finale after a record-breaking debut.
Paramount+ isn’t exactly shy about milking its Yellowstone universe, so here’s no shocker: their latest Western drama ‘Dutton Ranch’ has just been given the green light for a second season. What’s cheeky about this? Well, the show hasn’t even wrapped Season 1 yet — the finale’s dropping on July 3 — and they’ve already gone and renewed it. Confidence, or just eager to cash in? You decide.
'Dutton Ranch' Is an Absolute Ratings Monster
If you’re wondering why Paramount+ is doubling down, the numbers are a bit ridiculous. Since it first hit screens, Dutton Ranch pulled in 12.9 million viewers worldwide during its debut week, which is apparently the biggest launch for any original series in Paramount+ history. So if you thought people were tired of Yellowstone spinoffs, you were wildly mistaken.
On cable, the two-episode premiere on Paramount Network clocked up 2.9 million viewers — biggest cable drama premiere since 2023, by the way. For the actual broadcast of the first episode alone, they got 1.85 million tuning in. That put Dutton Ranch at number one for entertainment telecasts on cable that night, both in the all-important adults 18-49 group and for total viewers. And yes, according to Nielsen’s early stats, it was the most-watched streaming show for the week of May 11. So, yeah, it’s not just a ‘decent’ hit — it’s a proper juggernaut.
Who’s Behind and In Front of the Camera?
Dutton Ranch is steered by creator/showrunner Chad Feehan, and it’s all built from the characters created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson — who’ve been printing money for Paramount with this whole cowboy saga for years now. You’ve got Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser leading the cast, back as Beth and Rip, those Walking Disasters of the Dutton family, though now they’re trying life outside Montana. Ed Harris and Annette Bening have jumped onboard, which is an upgrade by anyone’s standards, joined by Finn Little, Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, and Natalie Alyn Lind.
- Main Cast: Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Ed Harris, Annette Bening, Finn Little, Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, Natalie Alyn Lind
- Created By: Chad Feehan (based on Sheridan and Linson’s characters)
- Executive Producers: Feehan, Taylor Sheridan, John Linson, David C. Glasser, Art Linson, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Christina Alexandra Voros, Michael Friedman, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Keith Cox
What’s It All About, Then?
For anyone not up-to-date: the show chucks Beth and Rip down in South Texas, trying, in true Dutton fashion, to outrun a haunted past and start over. Obviously this goes about as well as you’d expect: they quickly run slap into 'brutal new realities' and a properly nasty rival ranch. The vibe is: trust no one, forgiveness is a luxury, and if you want to survive, you might just have to torch your soul. Subtle, eh?
If you need a PR-friendly summary, Paramount+ exec Jane Wiseman put it into words:
'Beth and Rip are among the most iconic duos in television history, and we are thrilled to bring a whole new world to life with Dutton Ranch for our subscribers around the world. We’re also incredibly grateful to our partners, including the teams at Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios, for bringing this new series to life with such grit, heart, and authenticity.'
The first season’s been sitting pretty with an 89% 'Fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so audiences and critics seem to agree: messy, bruised cowboys are still very much in.
