Oscar Isaac Nearly Replaced An Avengers Star As The Face Of A Massive Spy Franchise
Oscar Isaac says he came within a hair of leading The Bourne Legacy, impressing producers despite a grueling screen test, before Avengers star Jeremy Renner ultimately got the nod.
If there was a sliding doors moment in the world of gritty spy sequels, Oscar Isaac could have ended up running through shaky-cam corridors instead of Jeremy Renner in The Bourne Legacy. Yep—you read that right. Isaac almost snagged the lead role in the 2012 continuation of the Bourne series, but things took an odd turn (literally, in one case, involving his foot).
Oscar Isaac vs. The Ultimate Audition
So here's how it went down, according to Isaac himself. He recently sat down with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and unspooled the tale. Apparently, director Tony Gilroy—who's also the guy steering Andor these days—was all-in after Isaac's screen test. And when I say 'screen test,' it wasn't just a read-through. It was an eight-hour marathon of trying to prove he could be a convincing action hero. To make things just slightly more ridiculous: Isaac was hobbling around in a medical boot after a skateboarding accident.
“I was like having to be like a Bourne, but hobbling around trying to look top character.”
So picture it: You're sweating through a physically demanding test for a spy movie—pretty much having to leap, grunt, and glower—and you've got only one good foot. Not ideal.
So Close, But Not Quite
After his broken-footed tryout, things were looking up. Gilroy straight-up told Isaac:
“You’re my guy. I’m going to really try to make this happen.”
The suits were apparently just as impressed. Back in 2011, Deadline even reported that Gilroy and the higher-ups were seriously tempted to roll the dice on Isaac as their lead. But here’s where it gets a bit business-as-usual: Despite all the hype, the studio decided to go with someone already a little more tested as a box office draw—enter Jeremy Renner, hot off The Hurt Locker and headed into the Avengers machine.
When Isaac finally got the call, it was exactly the kind of anticlimax you might expect in Hollywood:
“It’s not going to go your way. I’m so sorry.”
The big question was whether the world was ready for an unknown (at the time) Oscar Isaac in the lead. The answer, apparently, was 'not just yet.'
The Consolation Prize (Sort Of)
This story's not all bitterness and boot-related misfortune. Isaac didn't walk away empty-handed—he still landed a solid supporting part in the finished film. If you watched The Bourne Legacy, he shows up as 'Number 3,' which is one of the other hapless brainwashed assassins shuffling through the franchise's tangled conspiracy web. Not exactly a star-making turn, but hey, it puts him squarely in the universe, even if only for a bit.
The Cast, For Those Keeping Score
- Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross (the main lead, thanks to the above)
- Oscar Isaac as 'Number 3' (memorable part, just not the main one)
- Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, and others rounding things out
Looking back, it’s one of those casting near-misses that’s both kind of funny (Oscar Isaac limping through secret agent moves with a busted foot) and pretty revealing about how Hollywood works. Apparently, you can wow the director, impress producers, and still lose out because marketing wants a recognizable face on the poster. On the bright side, Isaac quickly rebounded—see: Ex Machina, Star Wars, and everything else he’s crushed since.
