Nolan’s biggest box office record now belongs to The Odyssey, not The Dark Knight Rises
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has overtaken a fan-favourite at the box office to become his biggest global earner ever — and the take is, frankly, massive.
Here we are again, another week, another Christopher Nolan box office juggernaut smashing records you'd have sworn were unbreakable. The Odyssey, Nolan's latest epic, has just elbowed its way past even his beloved caped crusader, setting a new high-water mark for the director and a good half the cast while it's at it.
The Odyssey has raked in $1.1 billion at the global box office in just four weekends, making it Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever.
New Box Office King
Four weekends in and The Odyssey has stormed its way past the $1 billion milestone, according to Box Office Mojo, which is frankly more money than Zeus himself would know what to do with. The film currently sits on $1.1 billion globally, finally unseating The Dark Knight Rises (which topped out at $1.085 billion) as Nolan's all-time earner. That's quite the feat, considering just how sacred some people still hold Gotham's traumatic billionaire.
For anyone counting beans, that's $461.1 million from US cinemas, paired with an even heftier $643.6 million flowing in from international markets. Notably, it's now the second-biggest movie of 2026, still trailing Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day (which is on $1.26 billion and frankly unstoppable at this rate), but comfortably ahead of Toy Story 5's $1.09 billion take.
Records Tumbled (and Who Benefits)
- Highest-grossing R-rated film of 2026 — both in the US and everywhere else. Not PG-friendly, but apparently that didn’t matter.
- Second-biggest R-rated movie ever, behind only Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.33 billion), because what's more bankable than a foul-mouthed superhero duo?
- Biggest film of all time for Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson. So, if you're in this film, it's probably now at the top of your CV.
- Nolan's films as a group have now passed the $7 billion mark at the worldwide box office. Just think about that number for a second.
- First Nolan film released by Universal to break the record. Universal is now home to both this and his previous multi-award magnet, Oppenheimer (which made $975.8 million).
Studio Brass Weighs In
Universal's Presidents are, predictably, quite chuffed. Jim Orr, who handles the US side of Universal's movie empire, gave this assessment of Nolan's brand of event filmmaking:
Christopher Nolan has earned audiences' trust by consistently delivering must-see theatrical events, and The Odyssey is him operating at the peak of his powers,
Meanwhile, overseas, Veronika Kwan Vandenberg (distribution chief for Universal Pictures International) pointed to Nolan's unique appeal on the world stage, suggesting there's no one better suited to adapt Homer's ancient poem for our multiplexes.
For the record, The Odyssey landed an A grade from CinemaScore audiences—not easily done with something R-rated and sprawling—which helps explain the sustained turnout. It's also the fifth film in 2026 to join the billion-dollar club. Clearly, you don’t need superheroes (or even Pixar toys) to pull that sort of money—though it probably doesn’t hurt if Nolan’s name is on the poster.
