Noah Schnapp reveals how a Stranger Things season 5 poster almost let slip a pivotal episode 4 twist about Will Byers’ emerging powers, and discusses the careful design choices behind it.

With the latest instalment of the much-discussed final season now out, Will Byers—portrayed by Noah Schnapp—has found himself at the centre of a rather significant development. The character, long known for his nervous glances and signature bowl cut, has finally been confirmed to possess abilities akin to those of Vecna and Eleven. Yet, as Schnapp recently shared, this revelation was nearly given away before the episodes even aired, thanks to a particularly telling piece of promotional artwork.

In a recent interview, Schnapp reflected on the process behind the show’s marketing materials. He noted that the intention was always to capture the spirit of the season and subtly indicate where each character stood in the unfolding narrative.

“It’s always supposed to kind of feel the vibe of the season and give an essence of where everyone’s characters stand in that era and chapter of our story,”

he explained. The design team, he said, wanted to suggest Will’s newfound resilience without resorting to overt spoilers.

“So yeah, you can see a strength in him on there. And obviously, they didn’t want to spoil it with any blood or anything, but as close as you can get. Everything is very intentional that we do.”

Hints and Near Misses in the Artwork

While the poster stopped short of outright revealing the twist, it did place Will in a rather prominent position—atop a tower beneath Vecna—hinting at the parallel abilities he would soon display. For those paying close attention, the imagery was almost a giveaway, though it managed to maintain just enough ambiguity to keep viewers guessing.

Schnapp went on to discuss the transformation his character undergoes this season. He argued that Will’s history of fear has often been misinterpreted as weakness, when in fact it has been a source of strength.

“I think people mistake fear for weakness. Will has had a lot of fear through the years because of what he’s had to endure, but that doesn’t mean he’s weak,”

Schnapp said.

“He’s pushed through that and come out stronger, and he does it scared every time. He always comes back, and he never crumbles. So that is his strength, and I think he shows that in the end, that he is stronger than we all think.”

Shifting Dynamics and What Lies Ahead

The emergence of Will’s powers marks a dramatic shift in the story, setting the stage for what promises to be a climactic confrontation. With the return of Kali, a familiar face from Eleven’s past, the Duffer Brothers appear to be preparing for a showdown of epic proportions in the remaining episodes.

As the series heads towards its conclusion, the question remains whether Will, alongside the rest of Hawkins’ unlikely heroes, will be able to stand against Vecna once and for all. The next three episodes are set to arrive on Christmas Day, with the grand finale following on New Year’s Eve.
