Peaky Blinders: when did Polly die, and why it had to happen off screen
Polly Gray was the beating heart of the Shelby family for five series — which is exactly why her absence hits so hard in the sixth. The answer to what happened involves real-life tragedy, and it's the reason the show's final series feels the way it does.
Helen McCrory's death
Helen McCrory, who played Aunt Polly from the very first episode in 2013, died on 16 April 2021, aged 52, after a private battle with breast cancer. Her husband, actor Damian Lewis, announced the news, writing:
"She died as she lived. Fearlessly." — Damian Lewis, April 2021.
Series 6 had started filming in January 2021, but McCrory was too ill to take part. She never shot a single scene for the final series.
How the show handled it
Series 6 premiered on BBC One on 27 February 2022, and the opening episode, "Black Day", confirmed Polly's fate within minutes. Picking up directly from the series 5 cliffhanger — Tommy's failed assassination of Oswald Mosley — the IRA reveal they sabotaged the plot and executed Polly in retaliation, returning her body to the family.
Her funeral opens the series: a caravan burning in the tradition of her Gypsy heritage, with Tommy vowing vengeance. The episode carries a dedication: "In loving memory of Helen McCrory".
Why off screen was the only option
There was no footage of McCrory to work with, and creator Steven Knight chose not to recast or digitally recreate her — a decision fans overwhelmingly supported. Killing Polly off screen, at the hands of the IRA, gave her death real narrative weight: it drives Tommy's obsession throughout the final series and hangs over every episode.
Michael's belief that Tommy got his mother killed becomes the engine of the series' final confrontation.
Does Polly appear at all in series 6?
Only in archive footage and in spirit — characters invoke her constantly, and Tommy hallucinates her presence at key moments. Knight has said the entire final series was reshaped by her loss.
For the record: McCrory filmed her last Peaky Blinders scenes for series 5, which aired in 2019. Polly's final on-screen line to Tommy — a warning that there would be a war in the family — turned out to be prophetic.
