Netflix Pulls the Plug on Classic Fantasy Adaptations, Report Says
Netflix has quietly axed its long-gestating Redwall adaptations, shelving both film and TV projects based on the beloved fantasy books and leaving fans in limbo, according to new reports.
Well, here's a bit of disappointing news if you grew up on talking mice and epic woodland battles: Netflix has apparently just bailed on its heavy-hyped plans to turn the Redwall book series into movies and a TV series. If you were hoping to finally see Cluny the Scourge animated on your screen, looks like you might be waiting a while longer.
So, What Happened?
A report from BroadcastNow says Netflix quietly let its adaptation rights for Redwall lapse. That's it — they're out. This move basically nukes what was supposed to be an ambitious set of projects, which, when first announced back in 2021, sounded like real event-TV stuff for fantasy fans.
At the time, Netflix and Penguin Random House made a big show of the deal, touting it as their chance to develop Brian Jacques' entire Redwall saga. We weren't getting just a one-off movie either:
- An animated film tackling the very first Redwall novel
- A separate, limited series about Martin the Warrior (aka the character literally on the tapestry in Redwall Abbey)
All told, Netflix had rights to adapt all 22 books. Not a small thing, especially with Redwall's die-hard fanbase.
Why Drop It Now?
The answer's not totally clear, but it's starting to look like Netflix has shifted strategy when it comes to its family-fantasy lineup. They're still moving full steam ahead on some other book adaptations — Roald Dahl, The Chronicles of Narnia (Greta Gerwig is still attached and the first movie's supposed to land soon) — but for whatever reason, Redwall just got left in the dust.
Kind of a head-scratcher, considering Redwall comes with built-in nostalgia and a world that pretty much screams 'franchise.'
The Fans' Perspective
If you read these books as a kid, this is definitely a letdown. Redwall isn't just 'cute animals with swords.' Jacques built a surprisingly complex world full of camaraderie, big questions about right and wrong, and plenty of emotional knockout punches (R.I.P., your favorite mouse). It's basically the fantasy series that got a lot of people into reading, period.
And let's be honest: animated badgers with war hammers? The world could use more of that.
Could Someone Else Pick This Up?
Here's where things get a bit murky. Neither Netflix nor the folks who run Redwall's publishing have made an official statement about the cancellation. So, in theory, another studio could swoop in, cut a new deal, and resurrect the plan. Nothing's locked in — it's just looking very unlikely right now.
'At the time, the deal with Penguin Random House was seen as a big move. It gave Netflix full control of the franchise’s adaptation rights for the first time. The plan included an animated movie based on the first novel and a limited series focused on Martin the Warrior, one of the saga’s most important characters.'
Bottom line: If you were hoping for a Redwall renaissance, might be time to break out those battered paperbacks again (or hold out hope for another studio with deep pockets and a thing for sword-wielding mice). For now, the adaptation dream has gone back into hibernation.
