How is Taskmaster UK filmed? The studio audience sees the show in a completely different order than you do
The episode you watch on Channel 4 is an illusion — a jigsaw assembled in the edit from footage shot months apart, in a sequence no audience ever witnessed. Tasks are filmed one contestant at a time at a house in Chiswick, and the studio sections are recorded later, two episodes per night.
The Taskmaster house
Nearly all the pre-recorded tasks happen at the Taskmaster House — a former groundskeeper's cottage on the edge of the Dukes Meadows golf course in Chiswick, West London, complete with its famous lounge, lab, kitchen, and Alex Horne's caravan in the garden.
Alex Horne originally wanted to film tasks in the comedians' own homes before realising how impractical that would be.
Each contestant films alone, roughly one day per episode, tackling around eight tasks a day, with filming days spread out across several months. Crucially, the tasks aren't shot in episode order — the edit decides later which task lands in which of the series' ten episodes.
The studio comes months later
Only after all the house footage is in the can do the contestants finally gather in front of an audience. The rules in between are strict:
- No talking — contestants are forbidden from discussing the tasks with each other until the studio recording.
- No previews — none of them see any footage before it plays on the studio screens, so their reactions (and horror) are genuine.
- Two shows a night — for a ten-episode series, the studio segments are recorded two episodes per day across five days.
- Alphabetical seating — the five always sit in alphabetical order, left to right.
The prize task and the live task are the only parts performed in the studio itself, which has been based at Pinewood Studios since series 4 — on a purpose-built set designed to look like the Clapham Grand, the theatre used for series 1.
So what does the audience actually see?
A completely scrambled version of the show. One taping contains two episodes' worth of material, drawn from tasks filmed on different days months earlier, screened out of the order they were attempted. Greg Davies even recorded some pandemic-era series with no audience at all, telling the Radio Times in 2021:
"For me personally, I liked that it was more intimate."
For the record: the house is listed on Google Maps as "Taskmaster House" — and it's still owned by the golf club next door.
