Mindy Kaling drops hints on who’s in and who’s out if NSFW gets season 2
Mindy Kaling is already game-planning Season 2 of Hulu’s Not Suitable for Work, teasing who could return and who might bow out as the June 2 debut racks up subscriber buzz despite split reviews.
If you've been watching Hulu's new comedy series Not Suitable for Work (or NSFW, for the cool kids—yes, that's the real title), you'll know it's been getting a bit of a mixed ride from the critics. Still, it's obviously found its audience, because it's racked up a spot in the streamer's top ten since landing at the start of June. Now, Mindy Kaling, who created the thing, has been talking about the future—particularly whether or not we'll see a second season (and, crucially, who might actually turn up for it).
What's the deal with Season 2?
Officially, Hulu haven't renewed Not Suitable for Work for another run yet. But here's the thing: Kaling's already set up a writers' room for season two, so it's clear they're not sitting around waiting for a green light.
When discussing where things stand, Kaling said:
"Of course, the big question is whether we'll get an official pickup for production, I keep my fingers crossed. I love the show so much, I'm so glad that it's doing well. One of the things that has made me so happy is how much the cast loves the show, and the writing staff loves the show, and the way that the cast expresses their love through all the social content that they've been doing."
Not exactly the most reassuring update, but she made it pretty clear that if it were up to her, they'd make the show for, well, as long as possible.
Who's in, who's out?
No one's been fired, but that doesn't mean there aren't question marks over the cast next time around. Kaling singled out Jay Ellis, who plays Bill Gibson—a role she obviously rates, as she made a bit of a point about wanting him back if the show returns. Apparently, his character is fairly central, so don't expect an easy rewrite if Ellis doesn't fancy another go.
She also dropped a few hints about what could be next for Avantika Vandanapu's Abhinaya 'Abby' Chilukuri and Nicholas Duvernay's Kel Washington. In her words, the writers have fun plans for Kel, who's realised (maybe a bit late) why Abby mattered. Fortunately for Kel, he's landed a 'cool job in New York,' he's got proper clout now, and Kaling called out that he's 'obviously really good looking and smart,' so both characters have fresh prospects if they can be bothered to return.
Let's talk numbers (and, yes, it's all a bit odd)
- The show dropped on 2 June 2026.
- Critical consensus: currently sitting at a 52% approval on Rotten Tomatoes. Bit of a coin toss, really.
- Performance with viewers: as of 24 June 2026, it's ranked #6 in Hulu's TV charts, per FlixPatrol. So, for all the grumbling critics, people are actually watching it.
Kaling's optimism probably isn't misplaced, all things considered—the fans seem to be there, even if the reviewers aren't entirely convinced. That said, Hulu do like to take their time with these decisions. If you're hoping to see more, keep an eye out, but don't get too attached to any one cast member returning until things are official.
