Milla Jovovich unleashes Protector on streaming—see when it drops
Milla Jovovich is suiting up again. Protector, the Magenta Light Studios thriller from director Adrian Grünberg and writer Bong-Seob Mun, has set its streaming debut and lands on MGM+ soon, marking her return to the hard-edged action of her Resident Evil era with a tale of a former soldier on a high-stakes mission.
If you like your action films with a side of parental vengeance and a dash of mid-2000s nostalgia, here’s one for the calendar. Milla Jovovich – yes, her from Resident Evil and all things apocalyptic – is back belting out hard-hitting action in 'Protector'. And if the cinemas passed you by, don’t fret: this little bruiser is finally heading to streaming, with an MGM+ debut locked in for July 3, 2026. Stick that in your diary, if you keep one that far in advance (honestly, who does?).
Let’s Talk Release Dates (Because It’s Been a Journey)
'Protector' didn’t just appear fully formed on streaming. It did the whole festival-marathon thing first, starting out at Busan International Film Festival back in September 2025. For those keeping score, it was tucked away in that Midnight Passion section – so, very much pitched as a late-night action affair.
Then, over to the States for a proper cinema run from 6 March 2026. Didn’t last long, to be honest, and by 21 April 2026 it was on digital platforms and pay-per-view.
What’s It Actually About?
Plot-wise, don’t expect anything wildly original (but it does what it says on the tin): Jovovich is Nikki, a once-decorated soldier now trying to play at normal life as a mum to her daughter Chloe. All goes pear-shaped when Nikki wakes up in an abandoned factory, Chloe’s nowhere to be found, and suddenly she’s caught smack in the middle of crime syndicates, coppers, and soldiers. Cue a very physical race to get her kid back, with all the broken noses and bruised egos you’d expect from something pitched as “a contained Taken”.
Who’s Who?
- Milla Jovovich as Nikki, our lead mum-on-a-mission
- Matthew Modine slumming it as Colonel Joseph Lavelle
- D.B. Sweeney playing Captain Michaels
- Michael Stahl-David as Detective John Blake
- Isabel Myers as Chloe (the kid in question)
- Extras: Arica Himmel, Don Harvey, Lydia Hull
Behind the Scenes (and Why It Feels Familiar)
Directed by Adrian Grünberg with a script from Bong-Seob Mun, and shot in New Mexico – you get all the dusty, shut-down industrial parks your heart could desire. Highland Film Group flogged it at markets as a tightly-wound thriller in the style of, yes, Taken. They weren’t shy about that comparison.
How’s It Actually Gone Down?
If you’re hoping for a cult classic redemption story – temper your expectations. 'Protector' has been roundly mauled by critics. Rotten Tomatoes score? A less-than-thrilling 17% from 30 reviews. If you’re more about audience numbers, there’s a slightly kinder 73% on the popcorn meter. Not exactly the most glowing return for Jovovich, but then, there’s always hope once it hits streaming. Sometimes the internet just loves a flawed bruiser.
'Protector' starts streaming on MGM+ from 3 July, 2026.
