Jason Sudeikis admits what went wrong in his nine-year relationship with Olivia Wilde
Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis didn’t hold back on Sunday’s episode of the Talk, discussing his split from Olivia Wilde and the lesson reshaping his relationships.
Plenty of famous exes would rather gnaw off their own arm than open up about their breakup years later. Not Jason Sudeikis. The Ted Lasso lead has just sat down on the Talk Easy podcast to pull back the curtain on what really tripped up his nine-year relationship with Olivia Wilde, and what he reckons he was missing at the time. Mildly excruciating if you’re not into public self-reflection, but still, there’s something refreshingly adult about it.
Here's how Sudeikis broke it down with host Sam Fragoso: “I think it’s just flat-out communication. I could have communicated better with how I felt, how things were making me feel [and] how things make me feel.”
He didn’t mince words about the dangers of keeping things bottled up, saying it’s hardly fair to expect anyone—romantic partners or colleagues in a writers' room—to be a mind reader. Not exactly groundbreaking, but I suppose admitting you could have handled things better on a podcast beats a moody indie album or the usual Hollywood PR boilerplate.
On why breakups sting on a delay, Sudeikis told Fragoso: “It’s the old equation of heartbreak, or any variation of it, takes half as long as the process itself … to get over something.”
The relationship in rewind
Here’s the abridged backstory: Sudeikis and Wilde first bumped into each other at a Saturday Night Live party back in 2011, kicked things off romantically, and were engaged by 2013. They later had two children—son Otis in 2014, and daughter Daisy in 2016. The split came in 2020.
Sudeikis went on to say he’s still rooting for Wilde in her career: “I’m thrilled for her, and I feel very fortunate doing what I’m supposed to be doing. But going through all that has allowed me to see when other folks are going through something similar.”
He kept it mostly civil, even as his own personal life took its twists. After the breakup, Sudeikis dated actress Keeley Hazell for about a year. Meanwhile, Wilde went public with Harry Styles, before reportedly moving on to actor Dane DiLiegro in 2025, and then musician Casper Jopling. If nothing else, the timelines are properly tangled, as so often seems to be the case in showbiz circles.
Sudeikis and Wilde’s relationship ran from 2011 to 2020, and included two children.
