Universal’s The Mummy: Book of the Dead has reportedly found its new lead — and she’ll be joining Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

Universal is quietly piecing together the next Mummy film, and there’s a significant new arrival you might not have spotted yet. They’re not just dusting off the franchise, either — there’s an Egyptian angle, and some old faces are back for another run-in with the undead.

The Mummy: Book of the Dead is scheduled for a cinema release on 15 October 2027.

Who’s Joining the Chaos?

Tara Emad, best known for work across Egyptian cinema and TV, will co-star in The Mummy: Book of the Dead. This isn’t an offbeat indie pick; she’s had roles in Diamond Dust, the local version of Suits, and made a memorable splash (literally) in The Blue Elephant 2 as a mermaid. Details of her character are firmly under wraps, so don’t bother scouring casting reports for spoilers — there aren’t any, yet.

Her signing comes just after Universal finally revealed the sequel’s proper title. She’ll be joining franchise regulars: Brendan Fraser, returning as Rick O’Connell, and Rachel Weisz as Evelyn. Also back: John Hannah (Jonathan), Oded Fehr (Ardeth Bay), and even Kevin J. O’Connor as the always-dodgy Beni. The supporting cast also includes Michael Johnston and Numan Acar, both previously announced.

What’s Actually Happening With the Sequel?

If you gave up on the last attempt, you’re not alone. This new outing is, apparently, ignoring The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor altogether and picking up the torch straight after the first two films instead. The script is by David Coggeshall (who did Orphan: First Kill), while directing duties go to Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — the duo from Radio Silence, previously behind Scream (2022) and Ready or Not.

Brendan Fraser has hinted that he’s had to get match-fit again for O’Connell — not entirely surprising, given the usual running-for-your-life quota these scripts demand. Plot specifics are being kept suspiciously quiet by Universal, although presumably there’ll be the usual mix of threat, slapstick, and people shouting about lost antiquities in the desert.

  • The Mummy: Book of the Dead hits cinemas 15 October 2027
  • Tara Emad joins as mystery lead, alongside Fraser, Weisz, and the returning core cast
  • Director duo Radio Silence at the helm; screenplay by David Coggeshall
  • Disregards the third film, connects directly to the first two
  • Still in production, so don’t expect trailers any time soon

You won’t find much else from the studio for now — they’re treating the plot like a newly discovered sarcophagus: sealed tight until further notice.
