Melissa McCarthy is ditching the punchlines for Netflix’s The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey, her boldest dramatic turn yet — and the release window is finally set.

Right, here’s one I did not see coming: Melissa McCarthy, best known for big comedies and a few offbeat dramas, is about to dive headfirst into proper true crime territory. Netflix has given her a leading role in a limited series all about – wait for it – the JonBenét Ramsey case. Yes, that JonBenét Ramsey case. This is not your average Hollywood whodunnit or glossy biopic. It’s one of America's most famously unsolved murders, and a story that’s been swirling with speculation and wild theories since that awful Christmas night in 1996.

So, what’s McCarthy actually doing?

Don’t ask her to start doing pageant poses. McCarthy’s not playing JonBenét. She’s actually set to play Patsy Ramsey – JonBenét’s mother, who became just as much a focus of global tabloid interest as the tragedy itself. If you remember your true crime TV, there have been several other attempts to dramatise this case. US telly tried its hand back in 2000 with the miniseries 'Perfect Murder, Perfect Town', then there was 'Getting Away with Murder: The JonBenet Ramsey Story' (hardly subtle, that title), and a 2016 TV film called 'Who Killed JonBenét'. Netflix itself had already poked at the case in documentary form with 'Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey'.

This isn’t your ordinary Netflix affair

The show is going by the extremely straightforward title 'The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey'. The official line is that it’s going to be about “one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history, and the devastating personal and public reckoning that followed the death of JonBenét Ramsey on Christmas night in 1996.” If you’ve never fallen down a YouTube rabbit hole on this case, just know: it’s remained unsolved all these years, and it’s an absolute minefield of theories, accusations and dead ends.

Who else is involved?

  • Emily Mitchell playing JonBenét Ramsey
  • Clive Owen
  • Garrett Hedlund
  • Alison Pill
  • Shea Whigham
  • Owen Teague
  • Clifton Collins Jr.
  • Angus Caldwell
  • Jaime Ray Newman
  • Series regulars: Rory Cochrane, Chris Bauer, Will Patton, Jeremy Bobb, John Billingsley, and Josh Stamberg
  • Guest stars: Margo Martindale and Tzi Ma

That’s a serious ensemble, not your standard Netflix algorithm cast. Oh, and in case you’re keeping a spreadsheet of TV show credits, here’s who’s behind the camera:

Richard LaGravenese (you might know him from 'A Family Affair') is running the show as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Anne Sewitsky is on directing duties. There’s a slew of other exec producers too – McCarthy herself, Sewitsky, plus David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, and David Hutkin. Writing support comes from Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach.

A bit of background on the series switch-up

Here’s a quirky production tidbit – this series wasn’t even a Netflix thing to begin with. It started out in development over at Paramount+, before jumping ship and landing at Netflix. That sort of network migration seems to be the done thing with these prestige limited series lately.

Release plans

If you’re after a binge date, Netflix says 'The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey' will drop sometime in winter 2026. That’s quite the wait, but presumably they’re not planning to phone this one in.
