The DC boss has addressed the big rumour about Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise — but whether it holds water is the bit they clear up.

If you feel like you've been waiting half a lifetime for The Batman Part II, you're not imagining things. Matt Reeves' much-anticipated follow-up keeps slipping further down the calendar, and it's sent fans trawling every rumour, hint and wild theory floating about the internet. So, let’s clear things up using actual facts rather than wishful Reddit posts.

The Batman Part II has now been officially bumped all the way to February 2028.

To rewind: this sequel was originally pencilled in for October 2025. Then the Hollywood writers’ strike hit in 2023, and production slowed to a crawl as Reeves had to stop and start on the script. Warner Bros. did the usual song and dance — new dates, more delays — first knocking it to 2026, delaying it again to 2027, and finally settling on that far-flung February 2028 slot. That's three years pushed back, if you're keeping score.

Conspiracy Theory: Double Shooting?

As you'd expect, this endless waiting game had fans smelling a cover-up. Loads of people began insisting Reeves must be secretly filming The Batman Part II and a third film together, because how else do you explain a gap like this? Not helping were little bits of "evidence", like when Bill Ramey, the veteran Batman On Film bloke, posted a fan-made poster with an extra Roman numeral tacked on — sending rumour-mongers into overdrive.

And let’s be honest, that would have made a certain kind of sense. If they were shooting two films back to back, maybe we'd get a quicker turnaround for Part III and not have to wait until we’re all collecting our pensions.

James Gunn Steps In

Unfortunately for anyone clinging to that theory, James Gunn — co-chair of DC Studios — just shot it down in broad daylight. Answering a direct question from MovieTalkNow on Threads about whether the back-to-back filming theory was true, Gunn replied:

‘I can deny.’

That’s the official word. Reeves is not pulling double duty filming two Bat-epics at once. For all the speculation, there's nothing fancier going on than slow development and scheduling woes. You'll have to accept the agonising wait, just like everyone else.

State of Play: Cast and What Little We Know

The actual film — what can be said about it? Warner Bros. has only tossed us a tiny, dark teaser (a camera test, not proper footage), and story details are still locked up tighter than the Batcave. Robert Pattinson, returning as the brooding billionaire, has promised the sequel will be 'taking some big swings.' Andy Serkis is back as Alfred and says it's 'deeper, darker, and more emotional' this time around. Returning faces include:

  • Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon
  • Jayme Lawson as Bella Real
  • Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin

New blood is also joining, including Sebastian Stan, who, depending on the rumour you believe, is either playing Harvey Dent (aka Two-Face) or serial killer Victor Zsasz. Scarlett Johansson and Brian Tyree Henry have signed on in still-classified roles.

If you’re desperate for a fresh Gotham fix before 2028, there is a bit of consolation: DC Studios' Clayface is due out this October — a body horror spin on one of Batman’s nastiest adversaries (and, let’s be honest, a criminally underused one in live action). Pattinson’s Batman won’t be popping up in Clayface, but at least noir-Gotham vibes are still incoming before the real sequel lumbers into view.
