Luke Grimes Says Yellowstone Superfans Lose It When They Meet Him
Yellowstone stalwart Luke Grimes says die-hard fans can get a little obsessed—and sometimes disappointed—when they meet him off-screen, even as he extends Kayce Dutton’s story in the CBS spinoff Marshals.
Alright, let’s talk Luke Grimes—you probably know him as Kayce Dutton from Yellowstone. Grimes has basically been the heart and soul of that show since it started back in 2018, and he’s now riding into new territory with Marshals on CBS. But, here’s something hilarious: a bunch of diehard Yellowstone fans, after meeting him, realize he’s not actually a cowboy—and some of them don’t take it well.
You’re Not a Cowboy?!
Turns out, some Yellowstone fans are so deep in the Dutton family fantasy that meeting Grimes sort of breaks the spell. On Toronto’s CHUM 104.5, Grimes was asked about the weirdest stuff fans have said to him, and he didn’t hold back. A decent chunk of folks, apparently, are genuinely disappointed he’s not straight off the ranch. As Grimes put it:
'They loved that show so much that they were, on a certain level, upset that it wasn’t real. Like, they were so obsessed. A lot of times you’ll get the, "You’re not a real cowboy."'
Look, Grimes knows it’s a little ridiculous. He’s an actor, after all. Even he jokes: if he were a real cowboy, he’d be out herding cattle, not hitting his marks on set.
How the Whole Grimes Family Feels About The Hat
The weirdness isn’t only with superfans—his own son is bemused by the whole cowboy thing. During the LA premiere for Marshals, Grimes told People that his toddler thinks the cowboy hat is pretty hilarious and doesn’t get why dad keeps wearing something that enormous. But, at least his 1-year-old was excited to visit the set—and hey, someone’s got to appreciate the hat collection.
The Marshals Situation (Here’s the Deal)
- Marshals debuted on CBS March 1, 2026.
- Grimes reprises his role, now in a spin-off still set in the larger Yellowstone world.
- Critics are a bit divided, but audiences seem to show up, because CBS already renewed it for a second season. So don’t expect Grimes to hang up that fake cowboy hat just yet.
So, next time you bump into Luke Grimes, maybe go easy on the ‘not a real cowboy’ thing. The man’s got enough to wrangle: primetime TV, parenthood—and, apparently, some very confused fans.
