Leonardo DiCaprio opens up about his career ambitions, revealing a personal quest for a creative masterpiece that continues to elude him, despite his celebrated filmography.

Back in 2016, social media was awash with jokes about Leonardo DiCaprio’s elusive Oscar. Many were baffled that, despite a string of acclaimed performances in films like What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and Shutter Island, he had yet to secure the industry’s most coveted prize. The long-running meme finally met its end when DiCaprio clinched his first Academy Award for his role as Hugh Glass in The Revenant. As one user quipped, “RIP Leo’s Oscars meme.”

For DiCaprio, however, such milestones have never been the driving force behind his work. He has often insisted that awards are not at the forefront of his mind when taking on a new project.

“It’s never ever what I’m thinking about when I’m making films,”

he once remarked.

“There’s nothing I’ve done for the specific reason of getting an award. Every single time, you just go in there trying to bat a thousand, trying to give it your all.”

Recognition and the Real Motivation

That said, he has acknowledged the natural human desire for recognition, admitting that it would be odd not to care at all about such accolades. Yet, for DiCaprio, the true reward lies elsewhere. His ambitions stretch far beyond trophies and public acclaim, focusing instead on something less tangible but far more significant to him personally.

He has spoken about his admiration for the achievements of past actors and directors, and the enduring legacy of classic cinema. During the promotion of Clint Eastwood’s J Edgar in 2012, he told Back Stage:

“With every role that I’ve chosen or every film I’ve been a part of, I always think about the unbelievable accomplishments of actors and directors in the past and how many great performances have been given, and how many great films there have been in cinema’s history. And I have a great amount of respect for that.”

The Unattainable Standard

DiCaprio went on to describe his ultimate ambition:

“I suppose my endless, unattainable goal is to do something that is as good as I see in cinema’s past. And I don’t know if I will ever, on a personal level, believe that I have accomplished that. I don’t know if I’ll ever sit here and see a film and say, ‘This is absolutely everything I ever dreamed of on a personal or cinematic level.’ But that’s what sort of drives me.”

Since then, he has starred in a number of films that have sparked considerable discussion and admiration, including The Great Gatsby, The Wolf of Wall Street, Killers of the Flower Moon, and, naturally, The Revenant. From the audience’s perspective, many would argue that DiCaprio’s defining moment could be found in earlier works such as Catch Me If You Can, The Beach, Romeo + Juliet, The Aviator, or even Titanic.

Chasing the Impossible

Yet, it seems unlikely that DiCaprio himself will ever feel he has reached that elusive summit. This is a sentiment shared by many seasoned actors, particularly those who hold the golden age of cinema in such high regard. For someone who so deeply reveres the artistry of the past, it is perhaps inevitable that his own achievements will always feel just out of reach, no matter how celebrated they become.
